The session titled “The Future of Video Games: From Hobby to Industry” was a key part of the Arab Media Summit 2025, focusing on the thriving gaming sector which has now surpassed major traditional industries like cinema and music. The session, led by media figure Jassim Al-Shahimi, highlighted that the top three films in Hollywood history collectively earned around $3 billion, while the game “GTA V” alone exceeded $8.6 billion in revenues, cementing the status of gaming as the “oil of the future.”
Transformative Shift
Speakers noted that the gaming industry is experiencing a significant transformation, evolving not only as a form of entertainment but also emerging as a strategic future industry. This growth is underpinned by ambitious visions and increasing investments, positioning the UAE as a leading regional and global hub in this field.
In this context, Mona Al-Falasi, Director of eSports Strategy at the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, stated that Dubai is an exemplary model in supporting the gaming industry, thanks to extensive backing aimed at advancing this sector and nurturing emerging talent.
Significant Leap
She emphasized that the Dubai Festival for Digital Games and eSports, which began modestly in its inaugural year, saw a remarkable increase in participation during its fourth edition, with over 17,000 school students engaged and more than 70 innovative student projects showcased. This reflects a growing interest in this promising industry. Al-Falasi also pointed out that video games are not merely entertainment; they represent the future, with a comprehensive government strategy to support companies interested in investment, including the launch of a special visa for video game developers.
Abdullah Bin Baz, founder and CEO of “Baz Station,” commented that the UAE’s investment environment is fertile ground for the growth of the gaming sector. He noted that his project is focused on creating home spaces specifically designed for gaming enthusiasts, leaving a sustainable mark in the industry. He is also in the process of establishing an academy dedicated to training developers and engineers skilled in video game design.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Al-Busseimi, founder of the “True Gaming” platform, pointed out that the video game market has now become the largest globally, surpassing the combined markets of film and music. He highlighted that the Middle East, particularly the UAE, stands out as one of the most dynamic emerging markets in this domain.
