Short Film Lab: A Platform for Empowering Women

In a significant display of progress within the Arab film industry and the empowerment of women, the Arab Media Summit hosted a special screening of five short films as part of the Electronic Games and Film Forum. This showcase was produced by the “Short Film Lab for Emerging Female Filmmakers,” a visionary program aimed at supporting and empowering young female directors from the Arab world.
The initiative was launched by Netflix in collaboration with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and with support from the Dubai Film and Games Office. Over the course of five months, it brought together twenty young directors from five Arab countries: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, and Kuwait.

Training
The lab provided a comprehensive training and creative environment where participants received specialized guidance from renowned figures in the Arab cinema scene. The program included training and specialized mentorship with a budget of $25,000 allocated for the production of short films that were featured during the summit events.

The Films
The five selected films showcased diverse perspectives and themes addressed by the filmmakers. They included “Jreesh Salam” from Saudi Arabia, “Another Place” from Kuwait, “About Their Ghosts” from Egypt, “No Trace of the Horizon” from the UAE, and “Revolution of Rage” from Jordan. Each film offers a unique viewpoint on various social and humanitarian issues, reflecting the artistic maturity and societal awareness of its creators.

Experts
A distinguished group of mentors and experts from multiple fields, including directing, producing, editing, and sound, participated in the lab to provide artistic and technical support, helping participants transform their ideas into complete artistic works.

Safe Environment
This program demonstrates an increasing commitment from organizers to support women in the film industry and to create a secure and professional environment that enhances their presence, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive cinematic landscape in the Arab region. It represents a crucial step towards building a new generation of Arab female filmmakers who can articulate and represent their communities’ issues through impactful modern cinematic language.

Through this presentation, the films transcended mere artistic productions and served as living testimonies to what Arab women can achieve when afforded opportunities and resources in a profession that demands significant creativity, determination, and resilience.
