As the conflict in Sudan continues to wreak havoc, its impact on civilians grows increasingly severe. Amid the violence and chaos, diseases are resurging, preying on the weakened bodies of those caught in the crossfire. The lack of essential services, particularly in conflict zones and areas that have faced fierce battles, has led to dire conditions. Tens of thousands in Khartoum are struggling to survive amid food shortages and a lack of medical care.
The “Sudan Doctors’ Network” has issued an urgent appeal to health authorities in response to a cholera outbreak, reporting over 521 cases at the Al-Noor Hospital in Omdurman alone, with nine fatalities recorded last Thursday. This alarming rise in cases suggests a potential public health disaster on the horizon.
The network is calling on federal health authorities and the Khartoum Ministry of Health to disinfect public areas, close markets, prohibit street food sales, and control the transportation of water using unsanitary methods that greatly exacerbate the risk of cholera spreading.
Additionally, regional and international organizations are urged to respond swiftly and provide necessary medical supplies to mitigate the cholera outbreak in Khartoum, which has seen a significant spike in infections and fatalities over the past week.
Health reports indicate that the recent increase in cholera cases is estimated at 600 to 700 weekly over the last four weeks, highlighting serious issues regarding access to safe drinking water.
