Flood Death Toll in Central Nigeria Rises to 151

The death toll from devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall in Niger State, central Nigeria, has reached at least 151, as reported by local authorities yesterday.

According to Ibrahim Hussaini, spokesperson for the State Emergency Management Agency, more than 50 additional bodies were recovered on Saturday in the Mokwa region, the area most affected by the tragedy.

Hussaini stated that 11 injured individuals were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, noting that approximately 318 people have been affected, with at least 503 families impacted.

He also mentioned that search efforts for more bodies are ongoing, involving divers and local volunteers in the rescue operation.

The Mokwa region experienced heavy rainfall late Wednesday night, leading to widespread destruction, as floodwaters inundated and swept away numerous houses, some of which were still occupied.

Earlier this week, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency issued a warning forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for the central part of the country, including Niger State.

Further rain is anticipated over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of downpours extending to the southern regions as well.

The National Emergency Management Agency announced on Tuesday that it has intensified efforts to mitigate the effects of seasonal flooding across the country.
