A tragic incident occurred last night at the “Marienkrankenhaus” hospital located in the Hohenfeld district of Hamburg, Germany, claiming the lives of three patients and injuring over 50 others.
According to a representative from the fire department, all fatalities were adults. Additionally, two individuals suffered life-threatening injuries, while 16 others sustained serious injuries and 36 experienced minor injuries.
Firefighting teams were forced to evacuate parts of the hospital due to the blaze, which originated in one of the hospital’s buildings.
Some patients affected by the fire received treatment in the hospital’s emergency department, while others were transported to nearby facilities.
The spokesperson confirmed that rescue efforts have concluded, and the fire, whose cause remains unknown, started on the ground floor in a room within the geriatric wing and spread to the first floor.
Smoke from the fire on the ground floor infiltrated all four levels of the affected building. The fire department deployed a significant force of approximately 160 personnel. Victims were rescued using both aerial ladders and portable ladders, as well as through hallways equipped with smoke protection covers.
The “Marienkrankenhaus” is one of the largest church hospitals in Northern Germany, featuring around 600 beds and treating approximately 93,000 patients annually.
