The Office of the Prime Minister of Brunei has announced that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has been discharged from the hospital in Malaysia where he was receiving treatment.
The statement indicated that the 78-year-old Sultan will remain in Malaysia for a few days to recuperate, following the advice of his doctors, before returning to Brunei.
The Sultan was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur after experiencing fatigue during last week’s ASEAN summit held in the Malaysian capital.
Details regarding the Sultan’s return to Brunei are still unclear. The announcement confirmed that the Queen and other royal family members are accompanying him.
The Sultan holds multiple significant positions in Brunei, serving as Prime Minister, Commander of the Armed Forces, Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Defense.
Under his reign, Brunei gained full independence from Britain in 1984 and has experienced a rise in its standard of living, ranking among the highest in Asia.
