Recent developments on the ground in Ukraine show an escalation, with Russia launching a broad assault on Kyiv and other regions in response to Ukrainian attacks within its borders. The Kremlin has described the war as an existential issue, while Kyiv has called on its Western allies to increase pressure on Moscow.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia executed extensive missile and drone strikes on the capital overnight, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, with the sound of explosions echoing throughout the city. The military administration in Kyiv confirmed that three people died from the attacks, though the city’s mayor initially estimated the death toll at four.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that the deceased were first responders who rushed to one of the attack sites. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed on social media that, in retaliation for the destruction of its aircraft, Russia attacked civilians in Ukraine, damaging several high-rise buildings and energy infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that 49 individuals were injured nationwide in the overnight strikes, which targeted not only Kyiv but also various other towns and cities, employing over 400 drones and 40 missiles. Zelensky urged Ukraine’s Western allies to ramp up pressure on Russia, denouncing the devastation inflicted on the city of Kherson due to Russian shelling.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces conducted significant strikes on military and army-related targets in Ukraine the previous night. The Russian military claimed to have launched long-range weapons from air, sea, and land, successfully hitting what they described as a group of military-related objectives. Additionally, the Defense Ministry stated that Russian troops had gained control over the Fedorivka area in eastern Ukraine.
Moreover, Russia reported intense Ukrainian drone attacks targeting airports and industrial areas yesterday. The Defense Ministry indicated that 174 Ukrainian drones were downed over various regions, including the border areas of Kursk and Belgorod, as well as Crimea. Furthermore, their air defense systems reportedly destroyed three Neptune missiles over the Black Sea.
Ukraine also announced the successful bombing of two Russian military airfields during the night from Thursday to Friday, noting that their strikes hit three fuel depots at the Engels base in the Saratov region, as well as the Dyagilevo base in the Ryazan region.
Existential War
In the same context, the Kremlin stated that the conflict in Ukraine is an existential matter for Russia, responding to a question regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s comparison of the conflict to a children’s playground fight.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that while Trump is entitled to his opinion, for Russia, it is about its national interests, security, future, and that of its children. Peskov expressed Moscow’s gratitude to the U.S. for its mediating efforts, emphasizing the importance of ongoing communication with Washington.

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un pledged unconditional support to Russia across various fields, including the war in Ukraine, expressing confidence that Moscow will emerge victorious in the conflict.
Kim hosted Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu in Pyongyang, with North Korean state media reporting that Kim assured Shoigu of Pyongyang’s unwavering backing for Russia’s position and foreign policies on all critical international political issues, including the Ukrainian situation. Kim also conveyed his trust and optimism that Russia would achieve a decisive victory as it has in the past.
