NATO Implements Largest Rearmament Program in Decades

In a move aimed at enhancing European defense, NATO defense ministers have approved plans to arm themselves through purchasing air defense systems, ammunition, and drones, alongside calls from the US to increase military spending in preparation for any potential future threats.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has reportedly agreed to its largest rearmament program since the end of the Cold War. Defense ministers from NATO countries held a meeting yesterday to reach an agreement on the alliance’s new capabilities.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated from Brussels that the alliance will increase its military spending, enhance weapon production, and support Ukraine.

Attempting to achieve Trump’s goal of 5%, Stoltenberg proposed to NATO members to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, with an additional commitment of 1.5% for broader security spending, as reported by Reuters.

Stoltenberg emphasized the need for investment in air defense, long-range missiles, and control systems to secure the safety of nearly a billion people living within the alliance’s borders.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin pressured NATO to reach an agreement on increased defense spending that would satisfy President Donald Trump during an upcoming summit later this month.

The US defense secretary stated that the message of the United States remains clear, deterrence and peace through strength, but NATO countries cannot rely solely on Washington.

Each NATO member state is required to raise its military spending by 5% to counter threats. Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist stated, “We want NATO to raise defense spending to 5% by 2030.”

Trump urged alliance members to agree during the meeting scheduled for June 24 and 25 in the Netherlands to increase defense budgets to constitute 5% of each country’s GDP.

Diplomats suggest that European NATO members realize that increasing defense spending is the price to ensure continued US commitment to the continent’s security, allowing Trump to claim victory for his 5% demand during the summit.

Spain appears hesitant about the matter as it will not reach the current NATO goal of 2% of GDP by the end of the year. Other countries are negotiating to extend the timeframe and forgo the 0.2% annual increase in basic defense spending.

The agreement seems acceptable to most NATO countries, allowing Trump to boast that he has achieved his primary demand, although it actually lowers the requirements for his allies facing difficulties in this regard.

German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer estimated that the new requirements mean Berlin will need to add “between 50 and 60 thousand new soldiers” to its military.

Dutch Defense Minister Rob Bauer indicated that reaching the required level will cost the Netherlands 3.5% of GDP.

The fear of Moscow alone is not what is driving Europe to raise its ambitions; there is also uncertainty about the US commitment to the continent.

Trump’s return to the White House was a blow to Washington’s support for Ukraine and caused a shake-up in the Western approach to the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine for the past 3 years.

Ukraine’s allies seek to overcome American hesitation and answered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call to The Hague as a sign of support.
