ChatGPT Experiences Outage as Reports of Downtime Spread

Global Interruptions in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Services

Disruptions Reported

On Tuesday, users across the globe began experiencing disruptions with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and related services, as reports flooded social media platforms such as X and Reddit. Numerous users voiced their concerns about encountering difficulties while using the tools.

Outage Documentation

The reliable website, Downdetector.com, also confirmed these issues, documenting that they began affecting various regions on Tuesday. This points to a widespread problem impacting a large number of users.

Downtime Reports

OpenAI’s Response

According to OpenAI’s status updates, several users are experiencing increased error rates and delayed responses affecting ChatGPT, the Sora text-to-video AI tool, and OpenAI APIs. By Tuesday evening, the status for ChatGPT was altered to “partial outage”, with specific mentions of heightened error rates affecting the Sora tool.

User Experience Varies

While certain users report delayed responses and slow performance, others continue to use the service without any disruption, implying that the issues may not be universal. OpenAI has stated they are in the process of investigating these issues, though the root cause and timeline for resolving the outages are still unknown.

Impact on Different Account Types

Reports have also surfaced indicating that even users with paid accounts have encountered issues, receiving “Error in message stream” notifications both on the web and in the mobile application.

Previous Outage Instances

It’s noteworthy that ChatGPT has experienced similar service interruptions in the past. One occurrence was last year following the expansion of free-user access to GPT-4 models, and another was after integration with Apple Intelligence systems in December.

Current Service Status

Initially, the service status for ChatGPT was labeled as “degraded” starting on Monday but seemed to be addressed within the span of an hour. OpenAI continues to provide updates as the situation develops.
