Foundation Laid for Dubai Metro Blue Line
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has inaugurated the beginning of the Dubai Metro Blue Line by participating in its foundation stone ceremony. This marks a pivotal advancement in Dubai’s public transportation system.
Overview of the Blue Line
The Blue Line is set to span 30 kilometers and include 14 stations. It will enhance connectivity across nine critical districts, expected to house more than one million residents by 2040, in line with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
Growth in Metro Usage and Infrastructure
Dubai Metro has significantly impacted public transit since its opening on September 9, 2009. With over 2.527 billion passengers transported, ridership has escalated from 38.9 million in 2010 to an anticipated 275.4 million by 2024. Daily passengers averaged around 900,000 last year, with forecasts suggesting over 300 million users by 2026, reaching 320 million by 2031.
The metro network initially comprised 10 stations in 2009, expanding to 46 by 2011. By incorporating the Dubai Tram in 2014, the total number of stations grew to 56. Metro Route 2020 added an additional seven stations in 2021, making the total 64. With the addition of the Blue Line’s 14 stations, the network will achieve a total of 78 stations.
Expansion of Train Fleet
Accompanying the infrastructure growth, the train fleet increased from 16 at launch to 140 by 2021. With the Blue Line, the fleet will expand to 168 trains, including 157 Metro and 11 Tram trains.
Architectural and Design Features
Elevated metro stations will feature exteriors inspired by seashell forms, while the interiors will exhibit designs based on themes like Heritage, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, with special designs at Expo and Emaar Properties stations.
Connecting Key Areas
The Blue Line will integrate with the Green Line at Creek Station and the Red Line at Centrepoint Station. It will serve various zones, including residential, academic, and economic centers such as Dubai Silicon Oasis. This connectivity aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aiming to foster innovation.
The Blue Line’s first route will stretch 21 kilometers from Creek Interchange Station to Academic City, with 10 stations including an underground interchange. The second route spans 9 kilometers from Centrepoint Interchange Station, passing through Mirdif and Al Warqa, with four stations. A new metro depot will be constructed at Al Ruwayah 3.
A promotional film highlighted the Blue Line’s impact on connecting the Red and Green lines, offering direct 20-minute journeys to Dubai International Airport, and supporting the aim of a “20-minute city” where essential services are within 20 minutes for residents.
Sustainability and Economic Impact
The Blue Line will feature three interchange stations, including an iconic one at Dubai Creek Harbour. It will uniquely cross Dubai Creek with a 1,300-meter viaduct and is expected to carry 320,000 passengers daily by 2040.
Aligning with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, this line is the first in Dubai to achieve Platinum certification for green building standards. It aims to integrate transport options with features like bus bays, taxi stands, bike and scooter racks, and accessible parking. The Blue Line is projected to alleviate traffic congestion by 20%, enhance land value near stations by up to 25%, and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.
