Gold Prices Affected by Stronger Dollar Amidst US-China Talks
On Tuesday, gold prices experienced a decline due to a strengthening US dollar, as investors closely monitored outcomes from the US-China trade discussions taking place in London.
Price Movements
By 0502 GMT, the spot gold price had decreased by 0.6% to $3,307.72 per ounce, while US gold futures saw a drop of 0.8%, settling at $3,327.50.
The dollar index improved by 0.3% against other currencies, which led to increasing costs for gold buyers using non-dollar currencies.
Trade Negotiations Impact
The trade discussions between the US and China, the globe’s two largest economies, cover a range of topics including tariffs and restrictions on rare earth metals. Tim Waterer, a leading market analyst at KCM Trade, mentioned, “With ongoing trade negotiations, gold is maintaining a cautious trading pattern until clear progress between these major nations is evident.”
US President Donald Trump stated that the negotiations were proceeding well. A previous agreement between both countries had resulted in a temporary halt to mutual tariff impositions, providing some market relief.
Economic Indicators and Future Outlook
Economic data from China indicated a slowdown in export growth to a three-month low in May, attributed to US tariffs affecting shipments, alongside a worsening factory-gate deflation reaching its deepest level in two years.
Upcoming US inflation data, expected on Wednesday, may offer further insights for investors regarding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy direction. Waterer added, “A slight increase in CPI would be anticipated, but a significant jump might concern investors, possibly driving them to seek safe havens, thereby benefiting gold prices.”
Gold typically attracts investors during periods of geopolitical and economic uncertainty and tends to perform well in low interest rate environments.
Other Precious Metals
In other markets, spot prices for silver decreased by 0.5% to $36.52 per ounce, platinum remained stable at $1,219.65, while palladium saw an increase of 0.4%, reaching $1,078.94.
