UCC Holding, in partnership with Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal), has embarked on a groundbreaking venture in large-scale digital construction by initiating the printing phase for the largest 3D-printed building project in the world.

This endeavor signifies a major advancement in sustainable infrastructure and establishes Qatar as a leader in cutting-edge construction technology, according to a report from UCC Holding’s website.

The undertaking includes the development of 14 new public schools, with two of them being constructed entirely through 3D printing. Each school will cover an area of 20,000 square meters, resulting in a total of 40,000 square meters—significantly larger than any previously achieved 3D-printed structure worldwide.

These two-story schools will be built on 100 by 100 meter plots, representing a significant milestone in educational architecture and scalable infrastructure for the future in the region.

Deployment of the World’s Largest Construction Printers

For this unique project, UCC Holding has collaborated with COBOD, a Danish firm known for its leadership in 3D construction printing. COBOD has provided two bespoke BODXL printers, each measuring 50 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and 15 meters in height—similar in size to a Boeing 737 hangar. These printers hold the title of the largest construction printers in existence.

After several months of preparation, including site development, equipment setup, and testing, the printers are now operational and ready for use.

Local Expertise Meets Global Standards

UCC Holding has assembled a specialized team of architects, civil engineers, material scientists, and printer technicians to oversee the project.

Over the past eight months, this team performed more than 100 full-scale test prints using a BOD2 printer at a testing site in Doha. These experiments were crucial in creating optimized concrete formulations suitable for Qatar’s environment and in developing a custom nozzle for precise printing.

In May 2025, the team finished rigorous training with COBOD engineers, encompassing aspects from printer operation to structural layering and real-time quality control, thereby enhancing Qatar’s capabilities in modern construction techniques.

Environmental and Economic Advantages

3D printing presents numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits compared to traditional construction methods. The technology minimizes waste generation, conserves concrete usage, and lowers carbon emissions. Additionally, on-site printing reduces transportation requirements and reliance on supply chains, significantly accelerates project timelines, and enables more efficient resource management.

Printing operations will be conducted during nighttime hours to optimize concrete performance and minimize temperature-related issues, while also lowering dust, noise, and community impact.

Nature-Inspired Design

The architectural design of the schools incorporates flowing, curved walls that draw inspiration from Qatar’s desert scenery and dune formations. Such intricate, organic shapes take advantage of the design flexibility that 3D printing provides—achievements that would be exceedingly challenging or expensive using traditional construction techniques.

The completion of the two 3D-printed schools is anticipated by the end of 2025. This project not only highlights Qatar’s expanding role in innovation and sustainability but also establishes a new standard for educational infrastructure development on a global scale.
