Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has recently announced an exciting new addition to the world of board games.
Riyadh Monopoly, the official edition tailored specifically for the city, was launched on Thursday at the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). This updated version transforms the city’s landmarks, historical sites, and essential infrastructure into assets for players to buy, trade, and develop.
The event held at the KAFD Conference Centre gathered prominent individuals from various sectors, including government, business, education, and culture. Organizers termed it a “storytelling platform” that symbolizes Riyadh’s evolution and growth.
First created in 1935, Monopoly has sold upwards of 275 million copies, earning a Guinness World Record for being the most successful board game ever produced. With this new version, Riyadh joins cities like Dubai that have their own custom editions.
Available for purchase in stores across the Kingdom starting September 2025, this version of Monopoly is produced by KEAD Entertainment under a license from Hasbro.
“Riyadh Monopoly exemplifies our commitment to making major, strategic initiatives engaging and accessible for everyone,” commented Mazroua Al-Mazroua, Chief Marketing and Experience Officer at the King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD DMC).
“As the prime destination for both international and local enterprises in Saudi Arabia, we are forging new pathways for the youth to flourish.”
Beyond being a simple game, Riyadh Monopoly is also envisioned as a cultural artifact that reflects the Kingdom’s economic goals, youthful demographics, and increasing international presence.
With over half of the city’s residents under the age of 20, the developers believe the game serves not only as an entertaining experience but also as an educational tool and a means of national promotion.
“This vibrant board game encapsulates the city’s spirit and aspirations,” Al-Mazroua added. “It offers a delightful way for families and friends to engage with Riyadh’s rich culture and its promising future.”
The game features several significant locations, including KAFD, major government offices, and respected educational institutions such as the British International School Riyadh (BISR).
“We are excited to be represented on the board,” stated Anna Power, Principal at BISR Diplomatic Quarter.
More Than Just a Game
This initiative is also indicative of Saudi Arabia’s larger cultural transformation.
Aligned with the country’s diversification aspirations, Saudi Arabia is swiftly becoming a key hub for entertainment and leisure activities.
Sharif Hamad bin Majed Alowaishiq, founder and chairman of the Saudi Youth Society, described the game as a unique mix of education and national pride.
“This platform allows young Saudis to connect with their heritage while envisioning a bright future. The new generations can witness the remarkable changes in the city, supported by significant investments in urban development and cultural conservation.”
