The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran has taken effect.
The American leader urged both parties to adhere to the ceasefire.
Trump stated on his platform: “The ceasefire is now in effect; please do not violate it.”
This ceasefire agreement came into force on Tuesday after 12 days of military engagements between the two nations.
Press TV, an Iranian channel, reported that hostilities ceased following four waves of Iranian attacks on Israel.
Just before the ceasefire began, the Israeli military confirmed that Iran had launched six waves of missiles targeting various locations in Israel.
The military reported, “A short time ago, sirens were activated in several parts of Israel following the detection of missile launches from Iran.”
On Monday, President Trump stated that a “comprehensive and complete” ceasefire would take effect to resolve the conflict between Israel and Iran, potentially ending a 12-day war that raised concerns about further escalation in the war-torn region.
Israel, supported by the United States, conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities after accusing Tehran of nearing nuclear weapon capabilities.
Trump conveyed on his platform, “Assuming everything proceeds as intended, which it will, I would like to congratulate both countries, Israel and Iran, for having the capacity, bravery, and intelligence to conclude what should be referred to as the twelve-day war.”
While an Iranian official earlier confirmed Tehran’s agreement to the ceasefire, the Iranian Foreign Minister stated that there would be no cessation of hostilities unless Israel halted its attacks.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted early Tuesday that if Israel ceases its “illegal aggression” against the Iranian people by 4 a.m. Tehran time (0030 GMT), Iran does not intend to continue its response beyond that point.
Araghchi mentioned in a post on social media, “The final decision regarding the cessation of our military operations will be made later.”
A senior White House official indicated that Israel agreed to the ceasefire on the condition that Iran refrains from launching further attacks, noting that Trump facilitated the agreement in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump appeared to indicate that Israel and Iran would have some time to complete any ongoing missions before the ceasefire would take place gradually.
A source familiar with the negotiations told Reuters that Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani secured Tehran’s agreement through discussions with Iranian officials.
The official added that Trump informed the Emir of Qatar about Israel’s acceptance of the ceasefire.
The White House confirmed that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff were in direct and indirect communication with Iranian representatives.
Earlier, three Israeli officials indicated that Israel sought to conclude its campaign against Iran soon and communicated this message to the United States.
Meanwhile, Israeli channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu instructed government ministers not to make any public statements.
