The spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, Asghar Jahangir, reported on Sunday that the attack carried out by Israel on June 23 against Evin Prison in Tehran resulted in the deaths of 71 individuals.
In the wake of a prolonged military confrontation with Iran, Israel targeted the prison, indicating that it has broadened its scope of objectives beyond merely military and nuclear sites.
Jahangir stated in comments relayed by the Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the judiciary, that among those killed in the Evin Prison attack were administrative staff, young men fulfilling their military service, prisoners, family members visiting inmates, and neighbors residing near the prison.
He previously noted that part of the administrative building of Evin Prison suffered significant damage in the strike, leading to both fatalities and injuries. The judiciary has indicated that the remaining inmates were relocated to other prisons within Tehran Province.
Evin Prison holds a number of foreign nationals, including two French citizens who have been detained for three years.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed on the social media platform X following the attack that the bombing at Evin Prison in Tehran posed a threat to their citizens, Cécile Couvreur and Jacques Baril, labeling the situation as unacceptable.
