Israel and Iran: Is War Renewing?

The unexpected announcement from the United States regarding a ceasefire between Israel and Iran two weeks ago has left the door ajar for a potential resurgence of conflict. This is due to the fact that the objectives behind Israeli attacks, and possibly American ones, have not been fully realized, as field and political indicators suggest that the specter of confrontation has not faded; rather, it may be reorganizing itself in preparation for a more intense and dangerous round. Observers of this heated issue recognize that unless mutual deterrence significantly alters the situation, an explosion could be merely a matter of time.

Because the recent 12-day war did not yield decisive outcomes, the rhetoric surrounding subsequent political and military maneuvers indicates that another confrontation is not just a possibility but a waiting game.

The official Israeli broadcasting agency, Kan, has leaned towards anticipating a resumption of warfare by revealing that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a formal request to U.S. President Donald Trump during their early morning meeting at the White House. This request was for permission to launch another strike against Iran, aiming to halt any advancements in Iranian uranium enrichment or nuclear capabilities, especially after recent reports indicated that prior strikes achieved only partial success.

A recent secret intelligence report from the Defense Intelligence Agency affirmed that the Israeli airstrikes utilizing bunker-buster bombs did not significantly damage Iranian nuclear facilities, managing only to delay the nuclear program by a few months without touching its core.

Israeli Alertness

Israel has maintained a high state of alert along its northern borders due to potential retaliations from Hezbollah or other groups in the region. Additionally, leakages regarding the continuation of shadow operations inside Iran support the hypothesis that Israel adheres to a strategy of proactive deterrence.

Conversely, Iranian leaders, particularly from the Revolutionary Guard, have stated that Tehran retains “sufficient missile capabilities for two years of intensive conflict,” implying that Israeli strikes, including the initial surprise attack, have not achieved the strategic impact desired by Israeli leadership.

Reports regarding the extent of damage inflicted on the Iranian nuclear program remain mixed and unresolved. Moreover, Iran has ceased its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency following the recent attacks, which opens the door for resuming uranium enrichment away from oversight.

Iran’s missile capabilities continue to pose a growing threat, highlighted during the previous June conflict, where Iran demonstrated its ability to target deep into Israel using a variety of missiles, causing significant and costly destruction, raising concerns within the Israeli military establishment.

Russia and China

Israel harbors concerns regarding potential external support for Tehran, particularly with reports about possible arms deals with Russia and China that could include stealth aircraft and hypersonic missiles, in addition to enhancing Iran’s air defense systems using technologies from either or both countries.

Many experts believe that if war resumes, it could be more fierce, prolonged, and complicated, given the scale of targets and defensive capacities. This conflict may extend beyond air and missile attacks, potentially involving movements from allies in other arenas, thereby breaking traditional rules of engagement.

Regardless, the declared ceasefire remains fragile and appears closer to a tactical “break for the warrior,” implying that the prospects for explosion remain wide open, especially since the Israeli Prime Minister is often governed by domestic considerations that suggest a continued path of perpetual war.
