Global Warming Takes Lives and Causes Billions in Losses

The impact of rising temperatures continues to manifest through wildfires and floods, resulting in loss of life and extensive property damage across various regions worldwide. Experts predict that these effects could inflict economic damages amounting to tens of billions of dollars.

Officials have reported that at least eight individuals have lost their lives, with over 20 others unaccounted for following the flooding of the Boti Kushi River, which destroyed the Friendship Bridge connecting China and Nepal.

Although there was no heavy rainfall in the area surrounding the river in the 24 hours leading up to the flood, meteorologists suggest that it may have been triggered by a glacial lake outburst in Tibet, where significant rainfall occurred.

Binod Jimeer, a spokesperson for the Nepal police, stated that eight bodies have been recovered, though none have been identified yet. He added that 57 people were rescued, and Raja Ram Pasnet, a representative of the Nepali army, confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing.

In another incident, a representative from the Marseille Provence Airport in France announced yesterday that the airport had to shut down due to a massive wildfire in the southern region near Marseille. The spokesperson indicated that no flights had taken off or landed since early afternoon, with some flights redirected to Nice, Nîmes, and other regional airports.

Economic Losses

In a related report, AccuWeather, a weather forecasting service, estimated that the devastating floods wreaking havoc in parts of Texas, USA, would lead to economic damages totaling between $18 billion and $22 billion.

This figure includes costs arising from insurance claims, rescue and repair efforts, as well as extensive cleaning processes and the anticipated long-term impact on tourism in the region.

AccuWeather points out that, despite the high cost of damage from flooding, homeowners’ insurance policies typically do not cover such losses; hence, many homeowners lack adequate insurance protection against flood damage.

While AccuWeather has provided a preliminary estimate of total losses, the extent of the impact on the reinsurance sector remains unclear. According to the company, only 4% of homeowners in the U.S. are covered by flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the catastrophic floods in Texas has surpassed 100, with extensive search operations for the missing continuing.

Economic Impact

At the same time, the UK’s Office for Budget Responsibility has predicted that global temperature increases of approximately 3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels could harm the British economy more severely than previously thought.

In its annual report on financial risks and sustainability, the Office for Budget Responsibility indicated that, in the scenario of a 3-degree Celsius rise in temperatures, the cumulative financial impact of climate-related damages and mitigation efforts could add 74% of GDP to government debt by the early 2070s, compared to earlier long-term forecasts.

While the Office for Budget Responsibility has revised its estimates for the cost of transitioning to a completely emissions-free economy down to 21% of economic output from a previous estimate of 30% in 2021, it has raised its damage estimates related to climate change.

Additionally, Mercator Ocean International reported that the Mediterranean Sea has recorded its highest-ever heatwaves for June, with these extreme marine heatwaves affecting 62% of the sea surface area.
