Recently, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai organized an extensive exhibition at its headquarters to highlight its innovative initiatives in artificial intelligence (AI), aiming to advance its AI Strategy for 2030.
The exhibition aimed to engage RTA personnel and partners, showcasing how AI is enhancing service provision, integrated mobility, and global standards in transportation and infrastructure, as reported by WAM.
AI Tools Promoting Intelligent Mobility
During the showcase, eleven AI-driven initiatives were unveiled, all aligning with six foundational pillars of RTA’s AI Strategy: Seamless and Innovative Mobility, People Happiness, Smart Traffic Management, Smart Licensing, Asset Excellence, and Future Readiness.
A key feature was the Bus Drivers Support System: Control and Operation Centre, which employs AI to interpret voice and data for real-time communications between bus drivers and the control center. Additionally, the Dubai Metro Water and Electricity Consumption Forecast Dashboard was featured; this tool utilizes predictive analytics to enhance sustainability and operational cost-effectiveness.
The exhibition also included the AI-driven Madinati WhatsApp service, which allows users to report damages to public transport assets. Another noteworthy project was the Smart Assessment of Cycling Track Infrastructure, utilizing new global standards to assess safety and comfort for cyclists. Furthermore, the Smart Road Asset Assessment System, leveraging LiDAR and AI technology, aids in prioritizing road maintenance and maintaining up-to-date digital asset records.
In terms of traffic management, the Smart Traffic Management initiative showcased at the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre illustrates the application of big data and AI in optimizing traffic flows. In addition, the AI-Powered Bus Network Management tool analyzes ridership statistics to enhance route efficiency. The Instructor Monitoring System incorporates in-vehicle AI cameras to evaluate the performance of driving instructors and uphold training standards.
Other significant projects included the Plate Price Prediction System, which leverages historical data for forecasting revenue from number plate auctions, and operations enhanced by Microsoft Copilot for efficient data analysis and automation of tasks. The Public Transport Station Management Using AI monitors passenger movement to improve flow and minimize wait times.
Hackathon Showcases Creative Solutions
In conjunction with the exhibition, RTA hosted expert panels, forums, and participatory discussions focusing on the impact of AI on smart mobility and urban growth. A three-day AI Hackathon allowed RTA employees to compete in creating AI-based transport solutions, culminating in an awards ceremony that recognized the most creative proposals.
Mohammed Yousef Al Mudharreb, CEO of the Corporate Technology Support Services Sector and Deputy Head of RTA’s AI and Data Science Team, stated that the event built upon the momentum of Dubai AI Week held last April. This initiative, initiated under the direction of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, intends to establish Dubai as a premier global hub for AI.
Al Mudharreb highlighted the necessity of engaging staff and strategic partners in harnessing practical AI applications while enhancing governance and technical capabilities.
In April, RTA announced its Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2030, comprising 81 projects aimed at establishing Dubai as a worldwide leader in AI-enhanced mobility and improving the quality of life for residents.
