French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday for a joint recognition of the State of Palestine by both France and the United Kingdom, asserting that this is the “only path that leads to a horizon of peace” between Israel and the Palestinians.
During a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Macron expressed his belief in a future two-state solution that would allow Israel to coexist peacefully and securely with its neighbors. He emphasized the need for unified voices in Paris, London, and everywhere else to acknowledge the State of Palestine and initiate this political momentum that alone can lead to a prospect for peace.
In April, Macron indicated in an interview with France 5 that a move towards recognition was necessary, stating, “We need to move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months.”
The French president clarified that the decision should not aim to please any specific party, but rather because it “would be a fair measure,” as he noted.
Macron reiterated his intention for France to be a part of the “dynamic” supporting this recognition.
He asserted that establishing an independent Palestinian state is the sole route to enduring peace between the Palestinians and Israelis.
Additionally, Macron remarked, “We must unify our voices in Paris, London, and everywhere to initiate a new political pathway that restores hope and leads to the acknowledgment of the Palestinian state.”
He pointed out that recognition should not merely be a symbolic act or aimed at appeasing any party, but rather a “just step” to be taken within a comprehensive political context aimed at peace.
