Oasis Palms of Al Ain: A Promising Harvest of Premium Local Dates

The oases of Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates are thriving with palm trees that yield some of the finest varieties of dates. This flourishing growth can be attributed to the availability of irrigation water, proper care, and fertilization, along with the annual pruning conducted by relevant authorities, particularly the Al Ain Municipality. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had a significant interest in the palm oases of Al Ain.

He commissioned the care and restoration of the falaj systems that irrigate the palm trees, even taking part in the excavation of some of them. The oases serve as a remarkable testament to the lifestyles, human practices, and social behaviors of ancestors that contributed to the sustenance of life in the oasis region and its surroundings.

Mubarak Al Katbi

According to Mubarak Al Katbi, Director of the falaj and oasis contract at Al Ain Municipality, “The Al Ain area is experiencing significant agricultural development, thanks to the immense efforts made by leadership to support the agricultural sector and enhance food security.”

Moreover, visitors to the Al Ain oases are genuinely delighted by the abundance of palm trees, which herald the arrival of fresh dates this season. Farmers have begun harvesting the early-ripening Nakhla dates using traditional methods. The Nakhla dates are noted for their beautiful shine and delicious taste, produced from the green farms of Al Ain.

He added that the impressive yield of dates from palm trees is largely due to the assistance provided to farmers, along with initiatives aimed at boosting productivity, improving crop quality, and promoting agricultural innovation.

The implementation of modern agricultural technologies has played a significant role in this success. Furthermore, the palm trees in the oases and the premium quality of dates they produce symbolize abundance and joy, deeply rooted in the hearts of the citizens.

Hadi Al Masafri

Hadi Al Masafri, an oasis guide in the green area of Al Ain, explained that the Al Ain oases have a prominent place in the memory of the local people and the UAE as a whole. They once provided refuge during high temperatures and served as a source of livelihood for the residents. Today, they are regarded as a cultural and human heritage that offers visitors a unique experience.

He added: “In the past, the inhabitants surrounding the Al Ain oases relied entirely on them and practiced agricultural activities that provided their dietary needs, including dates, vegetables, and local fruits. Those farming practices were a way of life for the area’s residents, and the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan played a vital role in promoting agriculture in the oasis regions.”

The Al Ain Municipality provides continuous care and support to the owners of palm farms in the seven oases by regularly monitoring irrigation and preventive measures. Notable varieties cultivated in these oases include Khalas, Fard, Khanizi, Boum’an, and Nakhla, which are among the most renowned date types found in these farms.
