The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai, a frontrunner in the realm of autonomous driving technologies, to initiate pilot trials of driverless vehicles within the emirate later this year. These trials represent a significant progression towards the anticipated commercial launch of fully autonomous services by 2026.
Timeline Preferred: Driverless Ubers to Appear on Dubai Roads
Pony.ai, a Silicon Valley company with extensive connections to China, has recently introduced the seventh iteration of its autonomous vehicles, developed in partnership with prominent automotive manufacturers including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC, as reported by Dubai Media Office.
These vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) systems and a comprehensive array of advanced sensors, including lidars, radars, and cameras, which facilitate precise navigation and ensure safety in diverse road and weather scenarios.
Additionally, the company has collaborated with major tech firms like Tencent and Alibaba to embed its robotaxi services into popular digital platforms such as WeChat and Alipay.
The MoU was signed by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, the CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, along with Ann Shi, the Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Pony.ai. The event took place in the presence of Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, and Dr. Leo Wang, the CFO of Pony.ai, alongside several senior officials from both organizations.
Advancing Dubai’s Vision for Smart Mobility
Al Tayer applauded the collaboration as a pivotal development in Dubai’s goal to emerge as a global leader in intelligent and sustainable mobility solutions. “The signing of this MoU aligns perfectly with our continuous efforts to embrace autonomous transport solutions, supporting our Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy,” he stated.
The strategy aims to achieve autonomy for 25 percent of all trips in the city by 2030. Al Tayer emphasized that such partnerships are vital for realizing this objective and underscore the emirate’s commitment to forging robust connections with leading global technology entities.
“The deployment of autonomous taxis will facilitate better integration of transport networks, enhance first and last-mile connectivity, and improve accessibility for all. This initiative aims to contribute to road safety, convenience, and an overall enhanced quality of life for both residents and visitors,” Al Tayer added.
He asserted that autonomous mobility is rapidly becoming a reality rather than a distant concept. Governments, including that of Dubai, are working diligently to establish the regulatory and infrastructural frameworks necessary to support the implementation of self-driving vehicles.
Growing Autonomous Technology in MENA
Dr. Leo Wang from Pony.ai noted that this partnership marks a strategic advancement of the company’s global presence. “This collaboration with Dubai RTA showcases our preparedness to implement Level 4 autonomous driving technology within critical international markets,” Wang explained. “By aligning our innovations with the RTA’s progressive vision, we are laying the groundwork for smart transportation networks throughout the MENA region.”
Pony.ai’s move into the Dubai market follows successful deployments in other international cities and indicates a growing momentum in the uptake of autonomous transport technologies.
The pilot initiative in Dubai aims to evaluate the integration of self-driving vehicles into the city’s mobility framework, laying the groundwork for a commercial rollout in 2026, thereby supporting Dubai’s long-term vision for smart, efficient, and sustainable transportation.
