Heatwave Ignites Fires and Devastates 3000 Hectares of Spain’s Forests

A heatwave affecting European nations has resulted in a significant wildfire, devastating approximately 3,000 hectares of forest, primarily within the “Els Ports” natural park in Pauls, near Tarragona in northeastern Spain. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors for their safety.

According to rural protection services in Catalonia on a social media platform, the fire has consumed around 2,899 hectares, mainly forested areas.

Initially, shelter-in-place orders have impacted nearly 18,000 individuals living in nearby regions to where the fire ignited on Monday, as explained by civil protection officials on social media.

Firefighters reported via their social media account that high winds, reaching speeds of 90 kilometers per hour, have complicated firefighting efforts, prompting the need to expand evacuation zones. They also indicated the closure of certain roads in the vicinity.

Nuria Barlo, the security chief of the Catalonia government, informed reporters that 300 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, and air support units were activated to assist in these efforts. Additionally, soldiers from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) have been integrated into the operations.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has stated he is closely monitoring the wildfire’s developments, expressing solidarity with the affected residents and urging everyone to exercise the highest caution.

On Monday evening, dense clouds of dark gray and orange smoke covered the dry hills, significantly impairing visibility over a wide area.

In the Murcia region, located over 400 kilometers away from the fire’s origin, residents reported a smoke odor that authorities believe is linked to the blaze in Pauls.

Spain has experienced extreme heat for several days, leading to soil desiccation and heightening the risk of wildfires.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency previously announced that the country had just experienced the hottest June on record, with an average temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record by 0.8 degrees Celsius set in 2017.

The agency noted that the frequency of heatwaves in Spain has tripled over the past decade.

In 2022, more than 500 wildfires burned approximately 300,000 hectares of land across the country, marking a record high for Europe, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.

In contrast, the year 2024 saw a significantly reduced area of about 42,000 hectares burned.

As of the start of summer 2025, roughly 21,000 hectares have been scorched according to reports from the European Forest Fire Information System.

A few days ago, Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera predicted “a very tough summer” in terms of wildfire risks.
