A 14-year-old student from a school in Dubai is making headlines in the conservation field with his podcast and publications. Smayan Sethi is actively raising awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and generously donating all earnings from his books and podcast to support conservation initiatives.
As an Indian expatriate, Sethi has authored two books, but it is his podcast, Conservation Calls, that has garnered widespread recognition.
Produced in his school’s studio, the podcast tackles urgent environmental topics, especially those related to wildlife conservation, with the backing of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZSCF).
So far, Sethi has released approximately 12 episodes, highlighting critical issues such as habitat destruction and the effects of climate change on various species.
‘Connecting with the younger generation’
In a conversation with Khaleej Times, Sethi, a Grade 9 student at Repton School Dubai, expressed, “Podcasts are a remarkable medium for storytelling that connects us with others. They enable us to convey significant messages about worldwide concerns and inspire action.”
“Today’s youth gravitate towards podcasts rather than conventional media. There’s a greater chance that podcasts can spur action compared to traditional formats.”
A firm believer in storytelling’s influence, Sethi utilizes his platform to showcase the work of conservationists globally. He commits all profits from his books and podcast to the MBZSCF, an organization that has funded over 2,800 species conservation projects and aided in the rescue of more than 1,750 species from extinction.
“With Conservation Calls, my aim is to spotlight the efforts of individuals across the globe who strive to tackle animal conservation challenges. I hope to contribute positively to the future of vulnerable species,” he stated.
An episode that particularly resonates with Sethi focuses on a groundbreaking discovery made in Hawaii, where a researcher utilized drones to find an extinct plant species in remote mountainous regions. He commended the ‘innovative methodology’ as a prime example of how technology is transforming conservation practices.
Linking fiction to reality
Sethi’s recent book, Shadows of the New World, addresses environmental themes, highlighting his belief that writing can engage readers with real-life issues. “My creativity played a vital role, and being an enthusiastic reader significantly contributed,” he remarked.
“Since childhood, I’ve read a multitude of books across various genres, which not only stimulated my intellect but also nurtured my creative abilities. Writing became my medium for expressing my feelings and ideas to a broader audience,” he shared.
The story follows a protagonist on a mission to save a piece of land from industrial development, a theme that resonates with Sethi personally. “I observed that similar environmental and nature-related themes kept emerging in my surroundings. That prompted me to link my fictional narratives with genuine environmental challenges,” he elaborated.
A passionate debater as well, Sethi advocates for the importance of young voices in forging a brighter future.
“Debating not only enhances my communication skills but also provides profound insights from the classroom and diverse global perspectives. This exposure equips me to tackle problems in innovative and effective ways.”
