UAE: Discover the 16-Year-Old Creator of a Pioneering App Highlighting the Nation’s Hidden Heritage

A 16-year-old student from a school in Dubai is pioneering a digital path to the UAE’s historical heritage through one of the nation’s first archaeology-centric mobile applications.

Aanya Rajput, a learner at GEMS Modern Academy and an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme candidate, is making a significant impact in the realms of technology and heritage with the launch of her archaeology app.

“It is essentially one of the inaugural archaeology apps in the UAE, showcasing the country’s remarkable and obscure archaeological locations,” Aanya explained.

The Journey of Creation

The concept for the app originated from Aanya’s visit to Hatta Heritage Village a few years back. “It’s one of the most visited heritage spots in the UAE, attracting numerous youth and tourists. I pondered why similar initiatives couldn’t be extended to other archaeological locations throughout the country,” she reflected.

This curiosity sparked the development of Daleel, a comprehensive digital resource and guide aimed at unveiling the UAE’s archaeological heritage.

“In Arabic, Daleel translates to evidence or proof,” Aanya noted. “I thought this was fitting as we aim to digitally display the evidence of archaeology for tourists, young people, and all residents of the UAE.”

Although the initial working name was ‘Yalla Archaeology’ — a light-hearted title proposed by her mother — Aanya believed that Daleel more accurately represented the essence and mission of the project.

Development Process

<p Fueled by her passion for archaeology and a deep appreciation for local history, Aanya commenced the development of the app in August 2024. During her research, she quickly recognized the limited and scattered availability of online information about the nation’s historical sites.

Determined to address this gap, she dedicated months to gathering data on a variety of locations. From ancient fossil sites to burial grounds, Daleel encompasses a wide range of the region’s overlooked or lesser-known historical narratives.

Key Features of the App

The app showcases numerous sites, including the Baynunah Fossil Site in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, which dates back to the late Miocene epoch, approximately six to eight million years ago. It contains fossil remnants that aid in the reconstruction of the ancient desert environment.

It also features the Necropolis of Shimal in Ras Al Khaimah, which boasts over 250 ancient graves and more than 300 individual burials, shedding light on ancient burial customs.

Additional sites included in the app are Jebel Hafeet, Hili Archaeological Park, Al Rumailah Fort in Al Ain, and Saruq Al-Hadid in Dubai, thought to be associated with the legendary city of Tu’am.

The app provides practical information such as visiting hours, entry fees, and any access restrictions. “All of that is clearly outlined in the app,” Aanya emphasized.

Furthermore, Daleel features a calendar for archaeology-related events happening across the UAE, complete with schedules, venues, and integrated Google Maps for easy navigation for tourists and locals alike.

“Our primary audience consists of the youth in the UAE, along with tourists and experts—essentially anyone with an interest. The information is presented in a straightforward manner for easy comprehension.”

Collaborative Development

The app, which is currently available on Apple devices with an Android version in the works, is the product of collaboration with two independent developers. Aanya handled the research and testing phases while her mother assisted in simplifying complex information and testing the initial versions of the app.

“We conducted a small beta test by sharing a link, and from that, we made adjustments to the wording and implemented some significant enhancements,” she stated.

With the app’s soft launch in progress, Aanya is already looking ahead. She plans to continue her studies in the United States after finishing her education.

“I have visited most of the sites personally, except for the elusive city of Tu’am, which remains challenging to access. I’m continuing my research and aiming to visit more locations to expand this initiative,” she shared.

“I intend to pursue higher education in Museum Studies and Archaeology. My goal is to make archaeology feel vibrant, engaging, and significant for future generations,” the Indian expat expressed.
