The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is set to kick off its second season on November 15 at Yas Marina Circuit, generating significant anticipation.
Following a successful inaugural event in April 2024, which attracted over 10,000 attendees and garnered more than a million online views, this season is expected to feature increased international involvement, innovative advancements, and an increased prize pool of $2.25 million.
Expanded Global Competition
This year, teams from ten different countries will participate, with France and Japan entering the league for the first time. Returning competitors from the US, Germany, China, Singapore, Italy, and the UAE will also rejoin, creating one of the most internationally diverse competitions in the arena of autonomous technology.
A highlight of this season is the Emirates Autonomous Vehicle (EAV 24), an upgraded autonomous racecar developed in the UAE. The EAV-24 showcases the country’s growing proficiency in artificial intelligence, robotics, and high-performance transportation. Based on the Super Formula SF23 platform, this car is equipped with enhanced sensors, improved computing systems, and refined control algorithms, which are specifically tailored for the challenges of autonomous racing.
Introduction of Virtual Racing
A2RL is also broadening its scope with the introduction of the SIM-Sprint, a series of virtual races designed to enable teams to test and enhance their AI systems in a controlled environment. The SIM-Sprint offers a stable setting for experimentation, allowing teams to address rare or extreme scenarios that would be difficult to replicate on a physical track. In the future, the league aims to open this platform to independent developers, enthusiasts, and aspiring teams globally, creating a pathway from virtual simulations to actual racing competition.
Faisal Al Bannai, an advisor to the UAE President on Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and secretary general of ATRC, stressed the broader mission of the league: “With A2RL, our aim extends beyond merely testing autonomous technologies; we are propelling their advancement in the most challenging environments available. This event represents engineering brilliance and serves as a preview of the future of mobility. From high-speed racing to practical applications, we showcase the capabilities that arise when countries invest in groundbreaking technological innovation and encourage the global community to think more swiftly, build more intelligently, and engage responsibly.”

Shaping the Future of Autonomous Racing
Central to the competition is the Dallara Super Formula SF23, customized exclusively for A2RL. Constructed from sustainable bio-composite materials and weighing 690 kg, the SF23 is the fastest open-wheel racing vehicle after Formula One, boasting the capability to reach speeds up to 300 km/h. Featuring advanced braking systems, drive-by-wire throttle control, and a bespoke autonomous system, the car provides teams with a state-of-the-art platform to develop and refine their AI driving algorithms.
Through A2RL, Abu Dhabi is establishing itself as a central hub for high-performance autonomy, highlighting how intelligent systems can be effectively developed, tested, and deployed on a wide scale. Beyond the racing circuit, the league aspires to motivate the next generation of STEM talent and expedite global progress in the realm of autonomous vehicle technology.
