The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has recently shared insights on its Automated Railway Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS), an innovative AI-driven solution that is revolutionizing metro maintenance and inspections.
This advanced robotic system represents a major advancement in the use of artificial intelligence within the transport sector, enhancing safety and operational efficacy while significantly diminishing the need for manual inspections.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s ambitious goal of establishing itself as a global frontrunner in AI and smart, sustainable infrastructure, as noted in a WAM report.
Technological Overview
ARIIS is an autonomous robotic platform outfitted with high-resolution 3D cameras, laser scanners, and sophisticated sensors. It primarily operates during nighttime maintenance slots, conducting comprehensive inspections of metro tracks and infrastructure without disrupting passenger services.
While traversing the network, ARIIS gathers extensive data regarding track conditions, including signs of wear, cracks, and structural discrepancies. This information is analyzed using advanced AI algorithms to facilitate predictive maintenance. Rather than merely identifying existing issues, the system projects potential future problems, enabling maintenance teams to take preemptive measures.
This proactive strategy considerably prolongs the lifespan of metro infrastructure, minimizes expensive emergency repairs, and reduces routine maintenance costs by as much as 25 percent.
Remarkable Efficiency
Since its launch, ARIIS has achieved impressive efficiency improvements. Inspection durations have been reduced by 75 percent, translating into a saving of approximately 1,700 human work hours. Traditional inspection processes have experienced a reduction of 70 percent, along with a 40 percent enhancement in the speed and accuracy of condition evaluations.
The RTA also indicates that ARIIS has improved the allocation of maintenance resources by 40 percent, owing to the real-time data analytics it provides, which inform more strategic, data-driven decision-making.
These innovations not only reduce expenditures but also bolster the reliability and safety of the entire Dubai Metro network, benefiting daily commuters and operational staff alike.
Future Prospects for ARIIS
Currently operational on select metro lines, ARIIS is in the process of phased rollout across the entire network. The RTA has assured that full implementation will follow successful technical assessments.
Looking to the future, the authority is also contemplating the application of similar AI-based technologies to other public transit systems, such as the Dubai Tram, contingent upon infrastructure compatibility.
All inspections carried out by ARIIS adhere to rigorous occupational safety standards and are centrally managed to ensure smooth integration with ongoing metro operations.
