The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has partnered with Amazon UAE to introduce a new initiative as part of the emirate’s “Sandbox Dubai” program, enabling individuals to participate in the delivery of Amazon packages on foot. This initiative aims to create new opportunities within the gig economy.
This pilot project, which falls under the gig economy sector of Sandbox Dubai, received approval from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, as well as Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai and DFF’s board of trustees.
The primary goal of the initiative is to shape regulations for emerging economic models while providing flexible income opportunities for both individuals and small enterprises.
According to the Dubai Future Foundation, this program has the potential to decrease dependency on delivery vehicles in crowded urban areas, thereby contributing to reduced traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, aligning with the emirate’s sustainability objectives.
Amazon and DFF initiative to enhance gig economy and support entrepreneurship
Ronaldo Mouchawar, Vice President of Amazon for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, mentioned that the company plans to leverage its global experience and technology to create innovative opportunities that enhance the gig economy, foster entrepreneurship, and drive economic growth by offering greater flexibility to individuals and businesses.
Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of DFF, stated that the partnership with Amazon aligns with Dubai’s strategy to develop a legislative framework that promotes innovation and bolsters the city’s competitive edge.
Sandbox Dubai is a component of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to double the emirate’s economy within the next decade and establish its position among the world’s top three global cities.
