Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who serves as the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has initiated the construction of the Dubai Metro’s Blue Line with the placement of its first station’s cornerstone.
Plans in Motion for a New Metro Line in Dubai
The Blue Line is poised to provide financial benefits estimated at 56 billion dirhams, as announced on Sheikh Mohammed’s official account.
The new station is expected to become an architectural marvel in Dubai and will be the premiere stop on the Blue Line. This line will cover 30 kilometers, extending the Dubai rail network to a total of 131 kilometers, featuring 78 stations in total.
The introduction of the Blue Line will greatly enhance transportation options throughout the city, connecting key areas such as Dubai Creek Harbour, Festival City, Mirdif, and Dubai Silicon Oasis.
This new line will incorporate both underground and above-ground railways, with 14 stations planned along its 30-kilometer stretch. It will include significant interchange nodes at Al Khor (Green Line), Centrepoint (Red Line), and International City (1).
A standout attribute of the project is a notable station situated at Dubai Creek Harbour, crafted by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), and will feature a distinct and iconic design.
Projected to handle 160,000 passengers every day by 2040, this station is expected to be a pivotal element in Dubai’s transit infrastructure.
The Blue Line also introduces a first-of-its-kind crossing over Dubai Creek through a 1,300-meter bridge, enhancing both the visual appeal and utility of the metro system.
Advantages of the Blue Line
The Blue Line is anticipated to decrease traffic congestion in crucial areas by 20%, increase nearby property values by up to 25%, and provide direct links to major locations like Dubai International Airport (DXB). Al Tayer also highlighted that the line will facilitate significantly quicker travel times between various districts, ranging from 10 to 25 minutes.
This initiative will be integrated into Dubai’s overarching urban development strategy, aligning with the ’20-Minute City’ initiative, which strives to make more than 80% of essential services reachable within a 20-minute journey.
Targeting to serve areas projected to host almost one million residents by 2040, the Blue Line will cover vital developments such as Dubai Creek Harbour, Festival City, and International City.
