GCAA in UAE Greenlights Initial Trial of Autonomous Baggage Vehicle at DWC

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE has issued its first regulatory license for the testing of autonomous baggage handling vehicles at Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC). This development is a significant advancement in the country’s initiative to enhance smart aviation infrastructure, according to a report from the state news agency, WAM.

In partnership with Dubai Airports and the ground handling company dnata, the approval facilitates real-time assessments of several autonomous baggage tractors in actual airside operations.

The regulatory framework strikes a balance between innovation and safety, positioning DWC as a leader in cutting-edge airport technologies.

“This approval is a pivotal achievement for the aviation sector in the UAE and embodies our leadership’s vision for a competitive, innovation-focused economy,” stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director-general of the GCAA. “We take pride in backing initiatives like this that ensure the UAE remains at the forefront of smart aviation.”

Testing Autonomous Tractors by Dnata at DWC

Dnata is set to conduct trials of autonomous tractors within a controlled environment established in collaboration with the GCAA and Dubai Airports.

This initiative allows for the examination of self-driving technology in a critical segment of aviation—ground handling—and supports more extensive efforts to modernize airside operations throughout the nation.

“This effort is not merely a technical trial; it serves as a model for the future of airside operations in the UAE,” remarked Aqeel Al Zarouni, assistant director general of the Aviation Safety Affairs Sector at the GCAA. “A clear and forward-thinking regulatory framework is crucial for promoting innovation without sacrificing safety.”

Dubai Airports confirmed that the trials coincide with DWC’s long-term development strategy. “DWC offers a distinct opportunity to foster and enhance next-generation solutions,” said Omar Binadai, chief technology and infrastructure officer at Dubai Airports. “As we prepare for the next chapter of aviation growth at DWC, these initiatives are essential in shaping a future-ready airport system.”

Jaffar Dawood, DSVP for UAE Airport Operations at dnata, expressed that the trial highlights the company’s commitment to operational efficiency and service excellence. “Integrating autonomous vehicles into live baggage operations signifies a critical advancement for dnata and the broader sector,” he noted.

This trial is part of a wider collaboration between dnata and the GCAA aimed at incorporating automation into ground handling. DWC, with a projected capacity of 260 million passengers annually, acts as a vital testing ground for scalable innovations within airport operations.

Information gleaned from this trial will guide the future implementation of autonomous systems within the UAE’s airport network.
