Officials assert that Dubai will remain a magnet for tourists despite tariff conflicts and global unrest

Dubai is poised to navigate the complexities of global uncertainties, such as trade disputes, visa challenges, and geopolitical tensions, according to senior officials on Thursday.

### Diverse Approach to Tourism

Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), highlighted that Dubai’s multifaceted strategy in attracting tourists worldwide will help mitigate the effects of international disturbances. The city saw a 3% increase in tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2025.

Adnan Kazim, deputy president and chief commercial officer of Emirates airline, expressed optimism regarding their booking outlook. He noted that the airline has the capability and experience to navigate through these challenges effectively.

### Effects of Global Issues

Global markets, trade, commodities, and tourism have all felt the impact of the ongoing tariff disputes, particularly between the US and China. Reports suggest that some international travelers, particularly from Europe and Canada, are hesitant to visit the US due to recent immigration policies and tariffs.

Issam commented, “The interconnectedness of the world means that changes in one area can ripple out and affect others. Trade dynamics are a vital part of this, often influencing various sectors.”

During a press conference about the upcoming Arabian Travel Market (ATM), he expressed confidence in Dubai’s resilience. He said, “Given our history and the way Dubai operates, we are well-prepared to manage these challenges.”

“We have established a diversified approach to our destinations, which can buffer us against varying impacts across different markets,” he added.

### Positive Travel Trends

When asked about the impact of visa issues on travel from Dubai to the US, Adnan shared that recent booking numbers for April indicate strong engagement between the two regions. “We have not observed any decline. Based on current trends, the outlook looks more promising than last year, leading into the summer and winter seasons,” he noted.

The Emirates deputy president emphasized that this trend suggests travelers are not willing to scale back on their journeys despite prevailing uncertainties. “Travel remains a priority for people. We’ve seen an uptick in this inclination post-COVID,” he remarked.

He also pointed out that the aviation sector has weathered many challenges in the past, including geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in currency and fuel prices.

“The announcement of our airline’s financial results in May will further illustrate our capability to navigate uncertainties. We have faced turbulent periods before and emerged even stronger,” he asserted.

### Industry Perspectives

Haitham Mattar, managing director of IHG Hotels and Resorts, conveyed that companies are currently evaluating the potential ramifications of various global developments. “It is premature to predict with certainty what the outcomes will be,” he stated.
