OpenAI to Collaborate on Major Data Center in the UAE
OpenAI is set to contribute to a major new data center project in the United Arab Emirates, anticipated to become one of the largest globally. This initiative marks a significant investment in the Middle East as OpenAI seeks to bolster its international artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Project Details
According to sources familiar with the initiative, OpenAI is expected to be one of the key anchor tenants for a new 5-gigawatt data center campus in Abu Dhabi. While OpenAI’s involvement is still not officially confirmed, an announcement may be made shortly. Additionally, Oracle Corporation is reportedly involved in the project, working on the initial phase of the facility.
Expansive Facility
Once operational, the extensive data center is projected to span 10 square miles and consume energy equivalent to that of five nuclear reactors. Although OpenAI will not utilize all of the 5 gigawatts on its own, the power will be allocated among various companies. Previously, reports suggested that OpenAI had been considering establishing a facility in the UAE.
Government Collaborations and Investments
On the same day, US and UAE officials announced that G42, an Abu Dhabi-based AI firm with historical connections to China, will build the data center in collaboration with several unidentified US companies. Notably, this announcement coincided with former President Donald Trump’s visit to the region, during which negotiations related to potential AI deals were ongoing.
Another local investor, MGX, is contemplating joining the project alongside OpenAI and G42, with additional US partners likely to come onboard.
Official Responses
OpenAI has refrained from commenting on the situation, and Oracle has not responded to inquiries. Similarly, representatives from G42, MGX, and the US Commerce Department have not commented on the matter.
Strategic Initiative
This new campus is part of OpenAI’s Stargate initiative aimed at advancing AI development. In January, OpenAI, along with SoftBank and Oracle, introduced Stargate, announcing plans to invest up to $500 billion in US projects over the next four years. Earlier this month, OpenAI expressed interest in collaborating with international governments to create more AI data centers outside the US, reinforcing America’s leadership in the sector.
Future Outlook
Through the UAE project, OpenAI aims to rapidly enhance the region’s infrastructure for AI services while pursuing goals initially set for the US. Last year, OpenAI had advocated for the creation of data centers with capacities up to 5 gigawatts, a target deemed unprecedented, particularly concerning energy supply for such facilities.
Currently, OpenAI’s first Stargate campus in the US is expected to have a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, with plans to establish up to ten more sites on American soil.
Broader Implications
The UAE data center is central to a larger bilateral framework designed to increase collaboration in AI between the US and UAE. This agreement could involve selling over a million advanced Nvidia chips to the UAE, aligning with efforts to enhance the global deployment of American technology while countering China’s influence in the AI sector.
However, certain officials within the Trump administration have expressed concerns regarding the strategic ramifications of transferring American AI capabilities abroad and the national security risks associated with sharing advanced semiconductors with firms linked to China.
OpenAI has maintained a longstanding relationship with the UAE, beginning with a partnership with G42 in 2023. MGX, which took part in OpenAI’s $6.6 billion funding round in October, is also expected to support the Stargate initiative.
