Quantum Advancement: SandboxAQ’s Call for Gulf Leadership in GPS Alternatives

As disruptions to GPS services escalate in the Middle East, impacting a range of sectors from aviation to personal devices, the implications for national security and economic stability are becoming increasingly concerning.

In an interview with Luca Ferrara, General Manager of AQNav at SandboxAQ, insights were shared about the critical vulnerabilities of GPS in aviation and how their innovative quantum-based navigation system, recently tested with Airbus, could enhance aviation resilience in the Gulf region.

Growing GPS Disruptions in the Middle East: What are the Risks

The issue is far more severe than many people realize, with numerous commercial flights experiencing signal loss while airborne. Recently, instances of GPS signal disruptions have led to complaints in the UAE regarding inaccuracies in clock settings and map functionalities on mobile devices.

The urgency of this situation is particularly pronounced in the Gulf, where a significant portion of the economy and essential infrastructure relies heavily on GPS technology. Every aspect, from oil shipments to air travel and logistics operations, is contingent on signals from GPS satellites. Any interference, whether through jamming or spoofing, can lead to serious consequences for safety, national security, and public confidence.

GPS as a Critical Vulnerability in Aviation: What Alternatives Exist

Currently, GPS is the most vital navigation resource for aviation globally, but the backup systems in place are not adequate for the complexities of modern air traffic management. In the event that a plane loses its GPS signal, pilots have to transition to radar and radio communication with air traffic control, which are already under pressure. They may also revert to inertial navigation, which can become inaccurate over time.

Additionally, the threat of GPS spoofing exists, which misleads pilots with incorrect GPS signals, posing an even greater danger as it obscures the fact that they are deviating from their intended path.

The AQNav System: A Quantum-Based Alternative

SandboxAQ and Airbus have recently completed successful real-world trials of AQNav, a GPS-independent navigation system. This innovative approach draws inspiration from how birds and whales have navigated over long distances by sensing the Earth’s magnetic field for centuries.

The AQNav system utilizes ultra-sensitive quantum sensors that detect magnetic field variations as an aircraft travels. This technology combines with AI-driven software operating on compact, energy-efficient GPUs to match the detected magnetic field against a comprehensive map of Earth’s magnetic fields.

Notably, AQNav operates independently of external satellite signals, is compact (approximately the size of a toaster), and is designed to be passive, making it impervious to jamming or interception. This internal functioning enhances the system’s resilience to spoofing attacks.

Testing Results: Implications for Commercial Viability

The trials demonstrated that AQNav met the FAA requirements for more than 100 flights, instilling confidence in its technological efficacy and market readiness. The trials encompassed over 44,000 kilometers of travel—equivalent to circling the Earth—conducted entirely without GPS support, showcasing both the scientific foundation and commercial potential of the system. Major industry players, including Airbus, Boeing, and the US Air Force, are already examining the technology.

Inviting Middle Eastern Participation in Future Testing

The Gulf region is strategically poised to take a leading role in this technology’s implementation. As a hub for global air travel and home to some of the world’s fastest-growing airlines and logistics centers, it also experiences high levels of GPS interference due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

This unique combination of challenges and opportunities makes the Gulf an ideal testing ground for resilient navigation systems. By collaborating with us during the next phase of testing, airlines and governmental entities in the Gulf can influence the evolution of aviation safety and resilience.
