Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has taken a significant step by launching its own version of a renowned board game.
Riyadh Monopoly, the inaugural official edition representing the city, was celebrated on Thursday at the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), transforming landmarks, cultural sites, and city infrastructure into collectible game pieces.
The event, held at the KAFD Conference Centre, saw the gathering of notable personalities from governmental, business, educational, and cultural sectors to commemorate what organizers described as a “storytelling platform” symbolizing Riyadh’s evolution.
Since its debut in 1935, Monopoly has sold over 275 million units, earning a Guinness World Record as the best-selling board game ever. With this new edition, Riyadh joins the ranks of global cities like Dubai that have created their own unique versions.
The game is set to be available across the Kingdom starting September 2025 and is authorized by Hasbro while being produced by KEAD Entertainment.
“Riyadh Monopoly embodies our aspiration to make significant, strategic initiatives accessible and enjoyable for individuals of all ages,” stated Mazroua Al-Mazroua, chief marketing and experience officer at KAFD Development and Management Company (KAFD DMC).
“As a premier destination for local and international enterprises, we aim to cultivate new possibilities for upcoming generations to prosper.”
Beyond being a mere novelty, Riyadh Monopoly is framed as a cultural artifact that encapsulates the Kingdom’s economic goals, youthful demographics, and increasing visibility on the global stage.
With more than half of Riyadh’s population under the age of 20, the developers regard the game as both an educational resource and a facet of national representation.
“This vibrant board game reflects the dynamism and ambitions of our city,” Al-Mazroua added. “It provides a delightful avenue for families and friends to connect with Riyadh’s history and its promising future.”
Prominent features on the board include KAFD, essential government institutions, and noted schools such as the British International School Riyadh (BISR).
“We are excited to be included on the board,” remarked Anna Power, Principal of BISR Diplomatic Quarter.
More than just a game
This initiative also signifies a broader cultural transformation within Saudi Arabia.
Aligned with its goals for economic diversification, the Kingdom is swiftly establishing itself as a center for entertainment and leisure.
Sharif Hamad bin Majed Alowaishiq, founder and chairman of the Saudi Youth Society, expressed that the game provides a unique fusion of education and civic pride.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young Saudis to engage with their heritage while aspiring for greatness. New generations can witness the city’s remarkable transformation, supported by crucial investments in urban growth and cultural conservation.”
