Struggling to express your thoughts? WhatsApp introduces a new feature to help you

To improve messaging efficiency while maintaining user privacy, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called “Writing Help,” powered by artificial intelligence, which aims to simplify and enhance the message writing experience.

This tool is tailored to assist users in composing messages with the appropriate tone, whether it be professional, humorous, or encouraging. Writing Help provides real-time suggestions aligned with the user’s intent, utilizing sophisticated AI technology to make daily communication more fluid and expressive.

In contrast to many AI applications that compromise data privacy, WhatsApp presents Writing Help as a privacy-conscious innovation. This feature is based on the platform’s unique “Private Processing” technology, which guarantees that neither WhatsApp nor its parent organization, Meta, can access the original messages or the modifications made by the AI.

A spokesperson from WhatsApp stated, “Our goal is to assist people in expressing themselves as they intend, in a manner they prefer. We believe AI can provide aid without losing sight of essential privacy and control values.”

To access Writing Help, users start typing in a chat—either one-on-one or in groups—then click the new pencil icon to activate AI-enabled suggestions. The system offers different tonal variations, such as professional, humorous, or supportive, enabling users to adjust their messages as needed. Users can modify their text until they are satisfied or opt not to use the feature at all.

Notably, Writing Help is an optional feature and is turned off by default. WhatsApp emphasizes that users retain complete control over their messaging experience, and no data utilized during this process is saved or accessible to third parties.

Strong focus on user privacy

Central to Writing Help, as well as WhatsApp’s wider AI initiatives, is the Private Processing system, designed to ensure user data remains local to the device. WhatsApp has released technical documentation and blog updates explaining the functionality of private processing and its role in maintaining end-to-end encryption during AI engagements.

To enhance user confidence, the company has also arranged independent evaluations from cybersecurity firms like NCC Group and Trail of Bits. These assessments confirmed that the system architecture adheres to stringent security standards and does not expose user messages during AI operations.

A WhatsApp engineer familiar with the system remarked, “For individuals worried about data privacy, this isn’t mere advertising—it’s substantiated. Private Processing signifies a pivotal evolution in the application of AI within messaging.”

Introduction of message summaries

Writing Help is not the sole AI-based feature WhatsApp is rolling out. In June of this year, the company introduced “Message Summaries,” another privacy-focused capability that aids users in quickly catching up on unread messages.

This feature summarizes messages that have accumulated, especially in active group conversations or after a period away from the app, allowing users to avoid scrolling through each message individually. Like Writing Help, Message Summaries leverage Private Processing to ensure all content remains encrypted and inaccessible to WhatsApp or Meta.

The summaries are generated on the user’s device and are not viewable by other chat participants. They are intended solely for the individual user’s benefit and are never stored externally.

Users can personalize their experience further through Advanced Chat Privacy settings, which let them determine which chats qualify for summarization. Message Summaries, similar to other AI features, is optional and also turned off by default.

Limited introduction with plans for global reach

Currently, both Writing Help and Message Summaries are being launched in English for users in the United States and a few additional selected regions. WhatsApp aims to broaden access worldwide and introduce support for more languages in the upcoming months.

This rollout marks a significant shift in WhatsApp’s product strategy, integrating AI to enhance user experience while upholding its commitment to secure, private communication.

Through the introduction of privacy-focused, optional tools like Writing Help and Message Summaries, WhatsApp seeks to redefine AI’s role within messaging—transforming it into a supportive resource rather than a privacy threat.

As competition intensifies among messaging platforms to offer more intelligent features, WhatsApp’s approach could establish a new standard for merging advanced functionality with user integrity.
