The Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) and the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) have officially unveiled a groundbreaking Personalised Weight Management Programme, marking a first for the region.
This initiative merges digital tracking, an innovative reimbursement strategy, and customized clinical support, all aimed at promoting lasting weight management and encouraging an active lifestyle. The goal is to considerably lower the chances of developing chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and specific types of cancer, thereby improving overall health and extending the quality of life.
An Innovative Approach to Long-term Health
The programme is available to Thiqa members aged 18 and older who have been clinically assessed as overweight or obese. It incorporates a unique reimbursement strategy that fosters ongoing involvement, personal responsibility, and active participation.
Insight into Dubai’s New Public Health Legislation
“Our emphasis is on enhancing health rather than simply addressing weight. This programme aligns with our objective of creating an active and health-oriented community by equipping individuals with personalized, scientifically supported solutions. Effective weight management necessitates tailored strategies rather than generic ones, and this initiative ensures that each participant is provided with the necessary resources for their success,” stated Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH.
Addressing Gaps in Preventive Care
“Research indicates that even slight reductions in weight and minor boosts in physical activity can greatly decrease the risk of chronic diseases. Historically, healthcare systems have not effectively facilitated pathways for doctors to assist patients in becoming more active or to link them with pertinent services. Our programme fills this void by offering structured support, personalized exercise plans, and ongoing tracking using digital tools and clinical supervision — empowering our community to take charge of their health and elevate their quality of life,” remarked Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC.
