Timepiece Review: Dh135,000 Overseas Panda Chronograph A Must-Have for Luxury Enthusiasts

As one of the elite trio in the world of luxury watchmaking and the longest-standing brand in the industry, Vacheron Constantin boasts a prestigious history that many competitors would envy, and it captivates aficionados of fine timepieces.

Joining fellow Swiss brands Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin represents the pinnacle of horology—termed the Holy Trinity—since its establishment in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1755.

With a legacy that spans 270 years of flawless craftsmanship, Vacheron Constantin—affectionately referred to as VC—has mastered the art of watchmaking. Among its numerous achievements is the creation of the world’s most complicated watch. However, the Overseas Panda Chronograph showcases a more streamlined yet elegantly sophisticated design.

Emphasizing its dedication to heritage and traditional values, VC approached the integrated bracelet sports watch market with careful consideration. The renowned “Overseas” collection saw a redesign in 2016, introducing for the first time a bracelet-and-case combination style, inspired by the iconic design of Gerald Genta’s Royal Oak, a creation of rival Audemars Piguet.

VC debuted a chronograph within the Overseas line in 1999, but the reimagined design unveiled two years later featured a “reverse panda” dial. Collectors noted that the absence of the classic panda style was a missed opportunity, prompting VC to fulfill this request five years later with its inaugural “panda” Overseas chronograph.

The panda dial has become a benchmark for chronograph design, taking its name from the distinct coloration of the giant panda, where the darker subdials contrast with the white face of the main dial, echoing the panda’s facial markings. Conversely, the reverse panda variant swaps the color scheme. Traditionally, a panda dial is released before its reverse counterpart, a sequence that VC surprisingly disregarded with its Overseas chronograph.

However, the arrival of the Overseas Panda Chrono addresses this oversight, embodying the finest qualities VC is renowned for: exquisite design, impeccable finishing, unrivaled quality, and allure, further solidifying its status as a hallmark of Swiss horology.

The Case

Demonstrating exceptional skill with both materials and mechanisms, VC has meticulously crafted the all-stainless steel case of the Overseas Chrono. The case features a finely brushed surface that contrasts beautifully with a polished bezel and the gleaming sapphire crystal, creating an impressive visual effect.

It includes a soft iron ring for anti-magnetic protection, while the screwed-down crown and quarter-turn locked pushers contribute to a water resistance of 15 bars, or 150 meters. A transparent sapphire crystal caseback showcases the stunning VC movement, and with a diameter of 42.5mm and a thickness of 13.7mm, the watch offers a comfortable fit for most wrists despite its slightly larger size.

The Movement

The Overseas Chrono is driven by VC’s mechanical, self-winding Calibre 5200. This in-house movement features a column-wheel chronograph design with an impressive 263 components and 54 jewels. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4Hz, it provides a power reserve of 52 hours. Highlighting its craftsmanship, the movement includes a solid gold rotor for automatic winding, prominently visible through the exhibition caseback.

The Dial

The dial is the most crucial component of any watch, and VC excels with the Overseas Panda Chronograph. The main silvery-white dial features a subtle sunburst finish, enhancing the visibility of the three recessed black subdials—one for running seconds and two for chronograph functions. All hands and markers—comprising hours, minutes, seconds, and subdial hands—are crafted from 18k white gold and equipped with Super-LumiNova for excellent legibility day or night. A carefully placed date window at 4:30 adds a clever touch to the overall symmetry of the design.

The Straps

As a sports watch with an integrated bracelet, this VC model includes a brushed stainless-steel strap adorned with links shaped like half Maltese crosses, boasting both polished and satin finishes. Additionally, the watch comes with two extra straps: a black calfskin leather one with grey stitching and a black rubber version.

A stainless-steel triple-blade folding clasp, complete with push-pieces and a patented interchangeable system, allows for easy compatibility with both additional straps.

Suitable for a range of occasions, whether in a corporate setting, timing laps in a high-performance vehicle, navigating a luxury yacht, or enjoying a coffee on the French Riviera, the Dh135,000 Vacheron Constantin Overseas Panda Chronograph exemplifies versatility, elegance, and sophistication for every wardrobe and event.
