TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump will begin a visit to three countries in the Middle East, starting with Saudi Arabia, followed by Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The primary aim of Trump’s trip is to negotiate business agreements with these Gulf nations. This marks his first significant foreign visit during his second term, as noted by the White House. Notably, Saudi Arabia was also the destination for Trump’s inaugural international visit eight years prior.
By prioritizing the energy-rich Gulf countries over European allies, Trump highlights the increasing geopolitical relevance of the Middle East. Additionally, this choice reflects his established business connections in the region.
The emphasis during this tour will likely be on solidifying commercial partnerships. The 78-year-old President can expect a grand welcome and opulent receptions in Riyadh, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.
Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia is prepared to engage in investments and trade amounting to $600 billion with the United States. Trump stated, “I will be asking the crown prince, who is an excellent individual, to increase that to about one trillion. I believe they will agree, as we have been beneficial partners,” according to France 24.
A source close to the Saudi Ministry of Defense mentioned that Riyadh is keen on acquiring advanced F-35 fighter jets and U.S. air defense systems valued in the billions. “We will insist that these deliveries occur during Trump’s presidency,” the source revealed.
It seems unlikely that persuading Saudi Arabia to recognize Israel will be a primary focus, as Riyadh maintains that any such discussions must correlate with the establishment of a Palestinian state first.
