The United Arab Emirates has announced that Sudanese citizens living in the country will no longer have to pay fines associated with expired residency and entry permits.
This initiative is intended to alleviate the challenges faced by those impacted by the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
According to a statement from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), this policy will take effect on May 19, 2025, and will remain in force through December 31.
Sudanese individuals with outstanding fines can now regularize their residency status using the ICP’s official online services.
This exemption is part of the UAE’s broader humanitarian efforts, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to supporting countries experiencing conflict or adversity. The ICP emphasized that this initiative embodies the UAE’s principles of tolerance, compassion, and solidarity with “brotherly” nations during times of crisis.
“This initiative is consistent with our national goals to enhance social and humanitarian welfare for residents in the UAE,” stated the authority.
Since the onset of clashes between competing military groups in April 2023, Sudan has been in a state of turmoil, resulting in a humanitarian disaster and the displacement of millions of people.
The UAE has been one of the leading contributors of humanitarian assistance to Sudan, engaging in various efforts, including the transportation of medical supplies and food relief, as well as establishing a field hospital in Chad, close to the Sudanese border.
Sudanese residents in the UAE are encouraged to take advantage of the amnesty period and apply online for permit renewals to benefit from the waived penalties.
