In an industrial area of the UAE, self-driving electric trucks are making their debut, thanks to a pioneering collaboration between Evocargo, an autonomous vehicle innovator, and RAK Ceramics.
The Evocargo N1 trucks are successfully integrated into the logistics framework of RAK Ceramics at the Al Jazeera Al Hamra industrial zone, where they transport products among various facilities.
According to Evocargo, these vehicles can effectively navigate real-time conditions, recognizing and interpreting road signs, lane markings, pedestrian crossings, and other critical infrastructure elements. Each truck can cover distances of up to 200 kilometers on a single charge.
These trucks are equipped with what is described as a “fifth-generation autopilot system” along with an AI-powered multi-sensor perception platform, supported by a comprehensive four-layer safety strategy to maintain data integrity and operational dependability.
The navigation system utilizes LIDAR, sonar, and cameras, all of which communicate with an onboard computer that processes sensor data and navigational information instantaneously, allowing for adaptation to shifting road circumstances. The operation is continuous, interrupted only for charging and concurrent loading or unloading tasks.
“Our primary focus is safety,” remarked Shaheem Musthafa, CEO of Evocargo Autonomous Logistic Services UAE, in an interview with Gulf Business.
“We ensure safety through a combination of cutting-edge technology and constant oversight. The trucks autonomous operations span from commencement to completion, with telemetry and performance data consistently transmitted to our remote Fleet Monitoring Centre.”
The initiative is designed with scalability in mind. “Currently, one operator oversees ten trucks, but our vision for the future is for a single operator to manage 100 vehicles at once,” Musthafa stated. “In unexpected situations, an operator can remotely halt a vehicle. Additionally, the autopilot is safeguarded by a four-layer independent safety mechanism that guarantees maximum reliability.”
This project represents a shift towards the realization of autonomous, zero-emission transportation as a viable option for everyday commercial activities. “Our robots-as-a-service approach renders this technology both accessible and scalable,” Musthafa emphasized. “This model allows companies to utilize autonomous vehicles on a subscription basis, eliminating the need for substantial upfront financing.”
For RAK Ceramics, this partnership underscores its commitment to sustainability. By incorporating autonomous electric trucks into its logistics operations, the company showcases its dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship. RAK Ceramics believes this initiative not only boosts operational efficiency but also minimizes its carbon footprint, contributing to the UAE’s broader sustainability goals, exemplifying the synergy between industrial activity and environmental responsibility.
UAE’s Broader Push for Autonomous Vehicles
The introduction of Evocargo’s self-driving trucks is part of a broader trend of increasing autonomous and electric mobility initiatives across the UAE.
In Abu Dhabi, autonomous delivery bots are being tested in Masdar City through a program spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Centre. Additionally, WeRide has initiated pilot programs for autonomous taxis in both Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi, including a collaboration with Uber to launch robotaxis on public thoroughfares. Meanwhile, Dubai has recently revealed a personal Level-4 “robocar” aimed at individual ownership, demonstrating the expansion of autonomous technology beyond logistics and public transit into the consumer realm.
Currently, autonomous vehicles can only operate on UAE roads under stringent regulatory provisions, typically as part of controlled testing scenarios.
National regulations allow their operation provided that operators obtain the necessary permissions from relevant authorities such as Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) or Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). At present, deployments are primarily restricted to specific zones — including industrial districts, smart city areas, and logistics centers — and often necessitate remote monitoring or a safety driver during the trial phase.
However, the UAE is progressively enhancing this regulatory framework as part of its national mobility strategy, aiming for 25 percent of all journeys in Dubai to be autonomously managed by the year 2030. As these regulations evolve, the utilization of self-driving vehicles is expected to extend beyond pilot programs to encompass public transportation, delivery services, and fully autonomous taxis across the nation’s roadways.
