US Economic Activity Remains Stable Recently, Yet Uncertainty Prevails, According to the Fed

The Federal Reserve reported on Wednesday that consumer prices have risen and that economic activity and employment levels have shown minimal change since March across the majority of the country. This reflects some early consequences of U.S. President Donald Trump’s unpredictable implementation of extensive tariffs aimed at altering international trade.

The central bank noted, “Uncertainty surrounding international trade policies was evident in various reports.” This statement comes from the Fed’s latest overview of the economic landscape, which is derived from surveys, interviews, and observations from the commercial and community connections of its 12 regional banks. “In several Districts, the economic outlook has significantly deteriorated as concerns regarding tariffs have increased.”

Known as the “Beige Book,” this report provides insights into the economic conditions and sentiments two weeks prior to each Federal Reserve policy meeting. Fed Chair Jerome Powell considers it essential for understanding future trends.

This edition may be particularly revealing as it is based on data gathered through April 14, a time marked by a rapid increase in global trade conflicts.

Powell and other policymakers at the Fed assert that tariffs are likely to contribute to both rising inflation and sluggish economic growth— a challenging situation because the central bank’s primary tool, short-term interest rate adjustments, can only address one of these issues at a time. Currently, they intend to observe the implications of Trump’s tariffs and the true evolution of prices and the job market before responding.

Even Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, seen as one of the more dovish members, advocates for a cautious approach until the situation stabilizes. This is particularly pertinent given the unemployment rate of 4.2%, which suggests a robust labor market, and inflation, projected at 2.3% in March by the Fed’s preferred metrics, is close to their target of 2%.

However, there are signs of concern. Confidence among households and businesses has significantly dropped, and surveys indicate that families anticipate rising inflation over the next year, despite most indicators showing that long-term inflation expectations—a factor the Fed believes could influence actual inflation—remain stable.

Trump has criticized Powell for failing to lower interest rates, suggesting that the Fed Chair is risking an economic downturn, which many analysts believe is becoming more probable due to Trump’s aggressive and unpredictable trade policies.

Financial markets expect that the Fed will begin reducing interest rates in June. The central bank’s upcoming meeting to set rates is scheduled for May 6-7, where it is anticipated they will maintain the current policy rate of 4.25%-4.50%.
