Dubai’s RTA Moves to Implement Sustainable Transport Plans
Nida Jassim, the Director of Safety Planning and Risk Management at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), announced during her participation in the WETEX exhibition that the organization has progressed from experimental phases to the actual execution of its strategic plans in sustainable transportation. The primary goal is to transform Dubai’s public transport system into one that is environmentally friendly.
Transition to Electric and Hydrogen Buses
One of the key focuses is the gradual shift of public buses to fully operate on electric or hydrogen power. This initiative aims to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Jassim highlighted that previous trials in this domain have yielded positive results, with some buses already in operational service.
Eco-Friendly Taxi and Limousine Services
The sustainability strategy is not limited to buses; it also encompasses taxis and limousines. Currently, over 70% of these vehicles are environmentally friendly, utilizing hybrid or electric technology. There is a plan in place to achieve complete transformation by 2040.
Broadening the Scope of Sustainable Transport
Jassim emphasized that sustainable transport extends beyond vehicles to include infrastructure. The RTA has installed solar panels on 22 of its buildings, contributing to emission reductions and promoting clean energy use, alongside implementing eco-friendly street lighting technology.
Community Engagement and Smart Transport Initiatives
The RTA’s role also involves community engagement through internal initiatives and collaboration with external partners to create an integrated smart and sustainable transport system. Additionally, a new AI-powered smart panel has been launched to predict water and electricity usage in the metro and train networks, aimed at conserving resources and minimizing waste.
