A Warm Welcome to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Agreement and Calls for Its Implementation

A historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been reached, facilitated by the United States, drawing widespread acclaim and recognition as a significant step toward lasting peace.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hailed the agreement as a historic milestone with Azerbaijan.

During a press conference following the signing, Pashinyan stated: “For months, I have asserted that there will be no war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but rather peace will prevail… Today, we can declare that we have achieved peace.”

Both European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa welcomed the agreement, urging prompt implementation.

In a joint statement, Costa and von der Leyen indicated that the accord signed at the White House marks a significant advancement, paving the way for enduring peace for both nations and the entire region. They emphasized the necessity of fulfilling the agreed steps within specified timelines to ensure continuous progress toward full normalization.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy also praised what he described as bold steps toward peace.

In a post on X, Lammy congratulated Armenia and Azerbaijan on the courageous measures taken in Washington for peace, applauding the American president for his crucial role in this pivotal achievement. He mentioned that the UK stands ready to support peace in the South Caucasus, contingent upon both parties adhering to their commitments.

Russia expressed its positive assessment of the agreement, viewing it as beneficial for peace, while Turkey also welcomed the signing.

Egypt voiced its support for the agreement, expressing hope that it would lead to new avenues of constructive cooperation between the two nations and reinforce the foundations of peace, security, and stability in the Caucasus region, ultimately benefiting the people of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the entire area, promoting regional development and prosperity.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, welcomed the agreement as well, stating through a post on X: “This historic development signifies a new dawn of peace, stability, and cooperation in the South Caucasus, a region that has endured decades of conflict and human suffering. Congratulations to President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan on this significant agreement, which reflects wisdom and insight in charting a peaceful future for their region. We also appreciate the American leadership, under President Donald Trump, in facilitating rapprochement between the parties and reaching an agreement that opens new avenues for trade, communication, and regional integration. We hope that the spirit of dialogue serves as a model for other regions struggling with long-standing conflicts.”

Iran welcomed the agreement but simultaneously warned against any foreign interference in light of the rights granted to the United States near its borders.

Iran expressed satisfaction with the two countries finalizing the peace agreement text while voicing concerns regarding the negative repercussions of any foreign intervention, particularly close to their shared border.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry asserted that any foreign interference could destabilize the region. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed the peace agreement mediated by the U.S. at the White House during a meeting with American President Donald Trump.

During the signing ceremony, Trump, alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, remarked: “It’s been a long time—35 years of fighting—and now they are friends, and they will remain friends for a long time.”
