Amid rising geopolitical tensions and an increasing reliance on unconventional warfare tactics, the United Kingdom is now confronted with a growing new form of terrorism, known as “agricultural terrorism.” This type of hybrid warfare directly targets food supply chains and farming operations, aiming to cause extensive economic and health repercussions without a single shot being fired.
A comprehensive investigation by the British publication “i Paper” reveals that the UK’s food security is now vulnerable to deliberate attacks that specifically aim at agricultural produce, livestock, and even food items in the markets, rather than traditional infrastructure or networks.
The report, compiled by journalist Cahal Milmo, paints a somewhat fantastical scenario where unidentified drones fly over English fields at night, spraying materials containing genetically modified fungi that poison the soil and grains, potentially endangering livestock and human health.
However, experts highlight that this narrative is not science fiction, but a plausible reality given the advancements in technology and the accessibility of low-cost offensive tools.
How Do Attacks Occur? Who is Behind Them
The investigation stipulates that the threat extends beyond hostile nations, including extremist groups and individuals equipped with the skills to generate or disseminate agricultural or animal diseases.
Attacks could manifest in simple forms like contaminating meat products or introducing pests through smuggled goods, or through more sophisticated means such as deploying viruses and fungi via drones.
Notably, the investigation correlates concerning real-life incidents, such as the arrest of Chinese researchers in the United States attempting to smuggle a fungal strain intended for use as a biological weapon, alongside recent shipments of contaminated seeds arriving in the UK, Canada, and the US from Asia.
Regulatory Gaps
Although the UK possesses an effective regulatory body through the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), “i Paper” reports that prominent security experts assert that the country is still overly reliant on “luck rather than strategy” to avert a potential epidemic.
This situation is attributed to structural issues, including inadequate biological infrastructure, a shortage of veterinary personnel, and the slow modernization of vital facilities such as the Weybridge national center, which will not be replaced until 2033.
Why is Agriculture an Ideal Target for Attack
The British agricultural sector is estimated to be worth around £14.5 billion, and the nation’s food supply chains are highly interconnected, making them susceptible to rapid collapse in the event of deliberate disruption.
Experts caution that modern agriculture, with its focus on limited crop varieties and intensive farming methods, presents a strategic vulnerability that could be easily exploited. Retired General John Galatas, a Greek expert in biological security, notes, “Agriculture is a very tempting target; Britain is an island with a high population density and concentrated agricultural infrastructure, making it more susceptible to devastating effects should a deliberate attack occur.”
Suspicions Surrounding Certain Products
The investigation highlights that commonly used items like spices could serve as gateways for agricultural attacks. According to expert David Stifle from the American Nuclear Threat Initiative, some food products, such as imported spices, could be manipulated in a manner that surpasses traditional fraudulent practices.
He notes that many of these spices come from regions prone to environmental and health risks, which facilitates their potential use as vehicles for diseases that are difficult to trace back to their origin.
The Need for a Strategic Shift
The experts involved in the investigation, led by Stifle and Galatas, advocate for prioritizing agriculture within national security, akin to energy and defense. An assault on food and agriculture not only incurs substantial economic losses, as evidenced by the 2001 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak that cost the UK an estimated $18.7 billion in today’s terms, but also undermines public confidence in food sources, triggering widespread social chaos.

What the “i Paper” reveals is not merely an academic or hypothetical warning, but an urgent call to redefine the landscape of threats in modern times. In an era of silent wars, the next strike may not come from a missile or cyber breach but from a contaminated seed or a drone soaring through the night.
