The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced significant progress regarding Russia following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. At the same time, his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about a meeting scheduled for today at the White House that will include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.
Although Trump and Putin did not disclose any concrete agreements after their encounter, Trump will host Zelensky and several European leaders today to discuss the outcomes of the Alaska summit and potential resolutions for Ukraine.
On his social media platform, Trump stated, “Major progress on Russia. Stay tuned for updates!” without providing additional details. However, Witkoff shared his hope with CNN, expressing anticipation for a “fruitful” discussion today.
The American President hinted at the possibility of a trilateral summit involving both Putin and Zelensky if today’s meeting with the Ukrainian leader goes well. This follows a tumultuous encounter earlier this year when Trump and Vice President Jay D. Vance publicly embarrassed Zelensky, an event that shocked the world, particularly European allies.
Security Assurances
The special envoy who attended the Trump-Putin summit conveyed that Moscow has made concessions regarding previously annexed regions in Ukraine.
Witkoff added, “I am optimistic that we will have a productive meeting today, and we will reach a substantial agreement to take back to the Russians and continue progressing on a peace deal to end the conflict.”
He emphasized that Trump and Putin agreed on “strong security assurances” for Ukraine during their discussions in Alaska.
He remarked, “We have agreed on strong security guarantees that I describe as game-changing.”
The meeting between Trump, Zelensky, and the European leaders aims to explore strategies to resolve the fiercest conflict in Europe since World War II.
The security assurances sought by Ukraine are expected to be a focal point of the White House meeting, which will include French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and others.
Following his summit with Putin, Trump abandoned his previous call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, shifting his focus towards negotiating a comprehensive peace agreement to permanently end the war.
Ceasefire
In related comments, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview with NBC that a ceasefire “has not been taken off the table,” but clarified, “What we aim for is to conclude the war.”
He shared that the United States will continue its efforts to develop a scenario to help bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, although success may be challenging.
Rubio expressed, “If peace cannot be achieved… and the war continues, thousands more will perish. Unfortunately, this could happen, but we do not wish for it.”
He also warned of potential “consequences,” including the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia if a peace agreement is not reached.
During a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels before the Kyiv Allies conference, Zelensky remarked, “I am not precisely aware of what was discussed between Putin and President Trump,” adding that “what President Trump tells us about security assurances surpasses Putin’s proposals.”
Von der Leyen welcomed Trump’s commitment to providing security assurances similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty to Ukraine, stressing that the country should maintain its territorial integrity.
Zelensky and his European allies had called for a ceasefire before resolving the conflict, but Trump clarified post-discussions with Putin that his efforts are now directed towards crafting a peace agreement, the specifics of which he intends to reveal during today’s meeting with European leaders.
Trump supports a Russian proposal to increase its presence in Eastern Ukraine, according to a source familiar with the discussions held Saturday between Trump and European leaders.
He is also suggesting freezing the front lines in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
German Role
German Foreign Minister Johan Vadivol expressed that the presence of European leaders accompanying Zelensky on his trip to Washington serves as a signal of European unity.
Before departing for Japan, Vadivol noted that a significant portion of this consensus can be credited to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The minister, affiliated with Merz’s Christian Democratic Party, asserted that Germany is consciously taking on a leadership role in the situation.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his Russian counterpart “does not desire peace” with Ukraine but aims for its “surrender,” following a virtual meeting with the “Alliance of the Willing” supporting Kyiv.
