Amber Piece Weighing 1 Kilogram and Dating Back 45 Million Years

The company “Kaliningrad Amber,” part of the state-owned “Rostec” group, has announced the discovery of the first amber piece extracted for the year 2025. This particular specimen weighs over 1 kg and is estimated to be more than 35 million years old, according to reports.

According to the company’s statement, the initial amber piece of the 2025 season was found in the Primorsky quarry, weighing 1.082 kilograms. The amber showcases a yellow hue, features an unusual triangular shape, and possesses a dense porous structure, maintaining excellent preservation and including one side crack. Experts estimate its geological age to be between 35 to 45 million years.

This piece will either be displayed at the company’s museum or made available for sale at a public auction, following the completion of all necessary examinations and tests.

Anna Dugina, a gem expert from the company, commented, “Amber pieces weighing over a kilogram are considered unique due to their extreme rarity. Given the natural fragility of amber, large specimens are seldom found. For instance, only nineteen pieces were discovered in 2022, while just ten pieces were unearthed the previous year.”
