Underwater excavations off the coast of Kaş in Antalya led to a remarkable discovery, as archaeologists from Akdeniz University uncovered a sealed ancient jar dating back 1,100 years.
The jar was found within the wreckage of a sunken merchant ship at a depth of 45 to 50 meters near the island of Pysmi.
The physical characteristics of the jar suggest that it was part of a shipment of olive oil originating from Gaza.
Researchers concluded that the ship sank due to a severe storm that caused it to collide with coastal rocks.
Dr. Hakan Ünöz, the head of the research team, stated that the discovered ship was involved in maritime trade between ports during the 9th and 10th centuries.
The sealed jar has generated exceptional interest, as it is one of the rare archaeological finds that has preserved its contents intact after centuries submerged underwater.
