Aoun Requests the Lebanese Army to Confront Israeli Incursion

Lebanon Faces Escalation After Israeli Incursion

Beirut – In a dramatic turn of events, Lebanon has witnessed significant developments following an Israeli military incursion into the border town of Blida early yesterday morning. During this operation, local council worker Ibrahim Salami was killed in his sleep. In response, President Joseph Aoun directed Army Commander General Rudolf Haikal to counter any Israeli encroachments, signaling a shift in Lebanon’s engagement in this conflict.

Israeli Airstrikes Target Southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes in the Mahmoudiya and Jermak regions of southern Lebanon, occurring in two separate waves. The National News Agency reported bombings in these areas near the town of Al-Aishiya. Additionally, local channel “Al Jadeed” noted that the Israeli military launched intense aerial assaults targeting the outskirts of the eastern Medineh Kfar Ramman region.

Israeli Military’s Justification

The Israeli military stated its strikes were aimed at facilities associated with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Spokesperson Avichai Adraee announced on the platform X that the army targeted infrastructure used for launching missiles and a tunnel entrance belonging to Hezbollah in the Mahmoudiya area of southern Lebanon.

Implications of Recent Developments

These actions followed a meeting of the ‘mechanism’ committee, which oversees ceasefire monitoring, attended by U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus. She urged the Lebanese army to implement a plan for the immediate disarmament of Hezbollah. As a result, political sources noted the incident in Blida may have been a prelude or justification for a larger American-backed Israeli operation in Lebanon.

This Israeli advance has raised questions about whether this escalation indicates a breakdown in negotiations between Ortagus and Lebanese officials or if it was a deliberate provocation aimed at exerting further pressure to encourage direct talks between Lebanon and Israel.

Call for Unity from Lebanese Leaders

In light of these tensions, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri urged unity among the Lebanese people and support for the President’s stance regarding the Israeli incursion. He stated that the current situation necessitates all Lebanese to rally in support of the President’s recent position.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli intrusion into Blida, calling the attack on a municipal employee while carrying out his duties a blatant violation of Lebanon’s state institutions and sovereignty.

Simultaneously, Salam addressed the issue of weapon control, focusing on both Palestinian and Lebanese arms; he informed ministers of significant progress in the camps. Meanwhile, U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus emphasized the importance of disarming all factions within Lebanon and highlighted a renewed deadline to centralize arms under the control of the Lebanese state by the end of the year.
