Unique artistic presentations were showcased in the “Gateway” section at the recently concluded Art Dubai 2025, held in Madinat Jumeirah. This section was curated by art expert Mirjam Faradeinis.
Mirjam Faradeinis stated that the creations displayed at Art Dubai consistently resonate with contemporary human and environmental issues. She emphasized that Dubai possesses an exceptional and innovative infrastructure for organizing art exhibitions and events that foster cultural communication. The city’s creative communities contribute significantly to cultural dialogue and explore global topics such as coexistence, migration, and environmental concerns through the embrace of international artworks, reflecting a vision for a more connected and understanding future while enriching the global art scene with initiatives addressing these pressing human and environmental issues.
Regarding the criteria for selecting participating artists in the “Gateway” section, she noted that the focus was on artists whose works reflect today’s global interests. In a world filled with turmoil and crisis, many individuals experience insecurity and confusion about current events. Art has the power to reimagine the world and present new realities.
She added that she was particularly drawn to artists engaging with urgent questions, offering reflections and insights into alternative ways of coexisting. Many of the presented works reference historical or traditional knowledge, reinterpreted through contemporary lenses.
The “Gateway” section featured ten solo exhibits from ten different countries, collectively amplifying voices that initiate conversations about pressing global issues such as climate change, migration, and identity.
Identity Experiences
She pointed out that the participating artists share a common interest in exploring coexistence models, often rooted in personal history, traditional knowledge, or environmental reflections. Many works utilize traditional or historical crafting techniques. For instance, artist Omar Massmar employs mosaics that blend ancient techniques with significant imagery to explore the complexities of human communication within its regional context. Similarly, the works of artist Gulnar Mukakhanova utilize traditional Central Asian materials like wool and shawls to comment on themes of globalization and identity.
Furthermore, she mentioned that the works in the “Gateway” section address how identities shift and adapt, and how traditions evolve when placed in new contexts.
Through the diverse practices of these artists, they challenge us to reconsider how to coexist — not only as human beings but also in relation to our environment.
Regarding the challenges faced while organizing this exhibition, particularly in collaborating with artists from different nations, Mirjam Faradeinis commented that organizing “Gateway” was both an exciting and challenging experience, especially since many pieces were specifically created for Art Dubai 2025. Working with artists from various countries necessitated navigating logistical, cultural, and communicative challenges.
