ChatGPT Involves American Lawyers

A U.S. federal judge has indicated that she is considering imposing penalties on several attorneys from a prominent law firm that was engaged by the state of Alabama to defend its prison system. This consideration comes after the submission of legal documents that were found to be based on incorrect information derived from the ChatGPT application.

During a hearing held in Birmingham, Alabama, Judge Anna Manasco disclosed that one attorney utilized ChatGPT to draft two legal memos, which included references to case law and quotes that do not exist.

Judge Manasco emphasized the growing national concern regarding the reliance on tools for preparing legal documents, especially due to the risk of including false information.

The judge announced that she is evaluating possible sanctions, including fines, and has granted the law firm Butler Snow ten days to submit a memorandum explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

During the session, the firm’s attorneys repeatedly apologized, clarifying that partner Matt Reeves was the one who used ChatGPT to seek out legal precedents, but failed to verify the accuracy of the quotes included in the documents presented to the court.

It was later revealed that these quotes were fabrications generated by artificial intelligence, presenting false information that appeared legitimate. Four attorneys, including Reeves, had signed the memos containing these inaccurate citations.
