A large painting by the artist Mark Rothko, valued at millions of dollars, was removed from display at a Dutch museum after being damaged by a child’s hand.
The incident occurred in a brief moment of inattention, where the child caused scratches on the surface of the artwork titled “Gray, Orange on Maroon, No. 8,” which experts estimate to be worth $56 million.
The painting was part of an exhibition at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Following the event, the museum issued a statement saying: “The painting suffered superficial damage after being touched by a child during the exhibition, leading to small scratches in the matte layer of paint at its lower section.”
The museum added: “We have called upon both local and international restoration experts, and we are currently exploring the necessary steps to address the damage, expecting to return it to display in the future.”
